Original job description
Engineering Manager (Mechanical Design) - Lead, Develop, and Elevate a High-Performance Design Team
You will own the mechanical design function and a team of up to 12 engineers. Your mandate has three parts:
- Equipment that performs at production speed,
- Engineers who keep solving harder problems, and
- Delivery commitments the shop floor can trust.
You bring engineering discipline and resilience to complex problems. When a mechanism must perform at production speed, you go back to first principles, solve the underlying engineering challenge, and deliver a solution that performs with precision and reliability.
You find the constraint, test the assumptions, fix the cause, and verify the result.
You move quickly, make your reasoning clear, and change direction when the evidence demands it. You hold yourself to the standard you set for others.
What YOU will own:
- Equipment that performs - Lead design reviews grounded in calculations, mechanical fundamentals, and test evidence.
- Engineers who solve complex problems - Coach through focused practice, specific feedback, and follow-up. Build technical depth and independence across the team.
- Milestones met - Plan capacity across multiple automation projects. Set priorities, coordinate resources, and raise risks early with a proposed response.
- Less Rework - Challenge requirements and remove unnecessary complexity. Strengthen CAD modelling, GD&T, calculations, drawings, and documentation.
- Solutions the team reuses - Turn proven designs and solutions into modular systems, documented standards, and practical engineering guidance.
- Changes under control - Own engineering change requests and orders. Maintain revision control and ensure approved changes reach purchasing, manufacturing, and assembly.
- Problems raised early and resolved - Create an environment where engineers question designs, expose weak assumptions, and report mistakes. Establish corrective actions and verify that they work.
- Recruitment, onboarding, performance reviews, and career development for your team. Help new engineers contribute sooner. Give strong performers technical challenges and the coaching to master them.
What YOU bring:
- 7+ years of experience as a mechanical designer in automation, robotics, packaging machinery, or custom machine building.
- Strong leadership ability with either informal or formal team-leading experience.
- Strong practical command of CAD (SolidWorks preferred), GD&T, pneumatics, servo systems, and mechanical fundamentals.
- Proven ability to manage timelines, coordinate teams, and solve cross-functional challenges.
- A track record of owning difficult engineering problems and demonstrating that your solutions worked.
- Experience developing engineers through technical leadership, coaching, and feedback.
- The ability to manage competing priorities across engineering and manufacturing.
- A strong ability to learn unfamiliar systems quickly and apply feedback.
- Experience with Lean manufacturing, structured document control, or engineering process improvement is an asset.
What success looks like for YOU
In your first 12 months, you will build a stronger mechanical engineering organization:
- Better designs,
- Stronger engineers,
- Less rework, and
- Predictable delivery.
