Purpose and Overview:

The Tax Manager plays a critical role in supporting the organization's tax strategy, compliance, and risk management objectives by overseeing key tax processes, driving operational excellence, and ensuring accurate and timely tax reporting. The successful candidate will collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders, manage complex tax matters, assess and mitigate tax risks, support business initiatives from a tax perspective, and identify opportunities to enhance processes, strengthen controls, and improve the overall effectiveness of the tax function.

Key Responsibilities:

Tax Provision and Financial Reporting
Manage the preparation of the monthly, quarterly, and yearly consolidated tax provisions, financial statement note disclosures, as well as supporting documentation.
Prepare and/or review responses to requests from external financial statement auditors.
Manage the tax team’s compliance with internal controls related to tax provision and compliance activities, including SOX controls where applicable.
Manage requests from both the internal audit team and external service providers related to SOX and internal controls testing.
Provide support and/or additional tax information or calculations to the finance and accounting teams to help with additional financial statement disclosures and other external reporting as required.
Develop, document, and continuously improve tax processes, policies, and standardized procedures.
Tax Compliance Manage the preparation and review of Canadian corporate income tax returns, including T2, T106 and T1134.
Assist the Tax Director or Sr. Tax Director with the preparation and coordination of other Canadian and international compliance filings, including but not limited to Country-by-Country Reporting (CbCR), Global Minimum Tax, and Extractive Sector Transparency Measures Act (ESTMA) reporting.
Maintain and review Canadian foreign affiliate surplus calculations, including exempt surplus, taxable surplus, hybrid surplus, and pre-acquisition surplus, where applicable.
Review foreign accrual property income (FAPI) calculations.
Monitor Canadian tax attributes, foreign tax pools and foreign tax credit balances.
Mange the preparation of other compliance filings, including but not limited to Mining Tax, GST/HST, T5, NR4.
Prepare and coordinate responses to Canadian tax authority audits, reviews, and information requests, as well as liaise with the tax authorities related to their audit/review requests.
Assist the Tax Director or Senior Tax Director in overseeing international tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions, including the United States, and other countries where the Company operates.
Support transfer pricing compliance by preparing intercompany charge calculations, reviewing transfer pricing documentation, and coordinating responses to transfer pricing audits and information requests.
Tax Planning / Special Projects
Assist with tax planning initiatives, including corporate restructurings, acquisitions, financing transactions, and other strategic tax projects.
Analyze the Canadian and international tax implications of capital contributions, distributions, dividends, and other intercompany transactions, including applicable withholding tax obligations.
Support the preparation of the annual global tax payment forecast and monitor actual tax payments against budget.
Monitor legislative and regulatory tax developments and assess their impact on the Company's operations.
Mentor tax specialists.
Coordinate work performed by external advisors.
Manage multiple projects while meeting tight reporting deadlines.
Promote continuous process improvement within the tax function.
Assist as needed with corporate tax restructuring and other tax projects.

Required Professional Skills, Experience and Qualifications:

5+ years’ experience, preferably in a public or industry tax practice environment
A CPA designation
Solid understanding of IFRS income tax accounting (IAS 12)
Completion of the CPA In-depth Tax Course
Strong tax accounting skills, preferably within a public accounting firm handling the provision calculations for large multinational clients or within a multinational corporation preparing the tax provision.
International travel may be required.

Required Competencies:

Self-starter in identifying and managing multiple tasks with varying priorities.
Possess excellent communication and organizational skills.

Assets:

Ability to speak, read, and write in Spanish.

Defining Success within the First Year:

In the first year:

The successful candidate will establish a strong understanding of the business and its tax profile, strengthen the management of tax risks and tax attributes
Improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the tax function. Key priorities include maintaining a robust inventory of UTPs and tax attributes (including ACBs, surplus accounts, tax pools, loss carryforwards, and credits)
Taking ownership of the tax provision process
Enhancing tax forecasting and budgeting in partnership with FP&A
Identifying opportunities to streamline compliance processes and reduce cycle times for key filings such as the T2, T1134, and T106.
The successful candidate will also be expected to recommend and implement process improvements that strengthen controls, improve data quality, and support informed tax decision-making.
