CNC MILLING MACHINIST
Shift: Evening Shift
Schedule: 3:00 p.m. – 1:15 a.m., Monday to Thursday
POSITION SUMMARY
The CNC Milling Machinist is responsible for the complete setup and operation of CNC milling machines to recondition, modify, and/or manufacture various types of profile tools, carbide tools, cutting tools, and related components in accordance with engineering drawings, OEM specifications, and established quality standards.
The successful candidate must be reliable, self-directed, detail-oriented, and quality-focused. The candidate must have solid machining and tooling experience, strong CNC milling setup capabilities, and intermediate to advanced blueprint and technical drawing interpretation skills.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
CNC Machine Setup & Operation
- Perform the complete setup of CNC milling machines, including reviewing work orders and drawings, selecting and installing tooling, fixtures and workholding devices, loading and verifying CNC programs, setting work coordinates and tool offsets, and establishing appropriate machining parameters.
Carbide Tooling & Machining
- Recondition, modify, and/or manufacture carbide tooling, profile tools, cutting tools, and related components according to drawings, OEM specifications, and customer requirements.
- Apply knowledge of machining processes, carbide tooling, cutting geometry, materials, and tool selection to achieve required results.
Programming & Troubleshooting
- Load, verify, and make appropriate modifications to existing CNC programs.
- Troubleshoot machining, tooling, dimensional, and programming issues and implement appropriate solutions with minimal supervision.
- Identify and address setup or process issues before they result in quality problems or excessive machine downtime.
Quality Control
- Use precision measuring equipment, including micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other inspection tools.
- Verify finished and in-process parts against drawings, specifications, and tolerances.
- Identify non-conforming parts and take appropriate corrective action or escalate issues when required.
Manual Machining
- Set up and operate manual milling machines and conventional lathes as required to support production and tooling reconditioning activities.
Maintenance, Safety & Housekeeping
- Perform routine machine checks and basic maintenance activities.
Documentation & Teamwork
- Complete production, inspection, tooling, and maintenance documentation accurately.
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Strong proficiency in CNC milling machine setup and operation.
- Strong blueprint and technical drawing interpretation skills.
- Knowledge of CNC tooling, workholding, offsets, coordinates, speeds, feeds, and machining parameters.
- Strong knowledge of precision measurement and inspection techniques.
- Ability to troubleshoot machining and equipment issues with minimal supervision.
- Ability to modify existing CNC programs.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Machinist diploma required.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 3–5 years of relevant machining experience in carbide tooling, tool reconditioning, or cutting-tool manufacturing is an asset.
- Experience with manual milling machines and conventional lathes is an asset.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to occasionally handle materials or parts weighing up to approximately 100 lbs, using appropriate assistance or material-handling equipment when required.
