THE OPPORTUNITY:
We're seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern to join Peripheral's Capture Systems team, designing and building the enclosures and protective structures that keep our sensors and electronics safe in the field. You'll work on housings for cameras, LiDARs, and other capture hardware, balancing thermal management, weatherproofing, and cable management against the practical demands of deploying hardware at arenas.
You'll get hands-on experience across the full design cycle, from CAD to prototyping to testing, working closely with our embedded and robotics engineers to make sure your designs fit the electronics and systems they protect.
WHO YOU ARE:
You're currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, and you're comfortable designing real, physical parts in CAD (we use SolidWorks) and taking them from a model to a working prototype.
You think practically about how a design will actually be built, protected, and used in the field, not just how it looks on screen. You're comfortable with tradeoffs between thermal performance, weatherproofing, manufacturability, and cost.
You like getting your hands on the things you design: you're comfortable with prototyping methods like 3D printing or machining, and you'd rather test an idea quickly than debate it in the abstract.
You're excited to learn from engineers across mechanical, electrical, and firmware disciplines, and to contribute real designs that ship on real hardware during your internship.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:
Design enclosures and protective structures for cameras, LiDARs, and other capture hardware, using SolidWorks.
Balance thermal management, weatherproofing, and cable management in your designs, working within the constraints of the electronics they house.
Build and test physical prototypes of your designs, using 3D printing, machining, or other fabrication methods available to the team.
Iterate on designs based on prototype testing and feedback from embedded and robotics engineers.
Collaborate with the embedded systems team to make sure enclosures fit and support the electronics and PCBs inside them.
Document your designs and contribute to the team's design library as you go.
REQUIREMENTS:
Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
Experience designing parts and assemblies in SolidWorks (through coursework, personal projects, or a prior internship).
Foundational understanding of thermal management, weatherproofing, or enclosure design principles.
Comfortable with hands-on prototyping and fabrication (e.g., 3D printing, machining, or similar).
Candidates must have the legal right to work in Canada for the duration of the internship and be based in or willing to relocate to Toronto for an in-office role. At this time, we are unable to provide immigration sponsorship.
NICE TO HAVE:
Experience designing enclosures for electronics or sensors specifically.
Experience with sheet metal design or design for manufacturing (DFM).
Experience with tolerance analysis or fit/finish work involving PCBs or other electronic components.
Prior personal, coursework, or competition project involving mechanical systems.
Experience with rapid prototyping workflows (iterating quickly between CAD, print/machine, and test).
