PetroChina Canada (PCC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of PetroChina Company Limited which is partially owned by China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), a state-owned enterprise. CNPC is China's largest oil company and the world's third largest oil company, operating 91 energy-related projects in over 35 countries and regions. PCC has invested billions of dollars in an asset-rich portfolio of upstream, midstream and downstream operations. In Alberta, this includes our MacKay River and Dover oilsands projects, Duvernay Shale Gas and a 50% interest in the Grand Rapids Pipeline. In British Columbia, we hold joint venture interests in the Groundbirch tight gas project and LNG Canada.

PetroChina Canada is recruiting for a Financial Representative to join the Finance & Accounting Team.

Reporting to the Manager, Financial Planning and Analysis, the Financial Representative will be focused on non-operated assets for LNG and / or upstream gas. The role will be a key focal point and liaison between the finance department and the asset team, providing financial insight and oversight. The Financial Representative will be responsible for developing and supporting financial planning, budgeting, forecasting and management reporting. As well, the incumbent will be heavily engaged with both commercial and contractual issues related to the relevant asset area and contribute to driving financial analysis across business lines to identify solutions to improve financial and operating performance.

This position is a full-time, in office position located in Calgary.

Accountabilities

The accountabilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

Budget & AFE (Approved For Expenditure) Management

Lead annual work program and budget planning, governance, and approval processes, ensuring alignment with JV agreements, business objectives, and strategic priorities.
Provide financial and accounting guidance on capital projects, AFEs, operating expenses, feasibility studies, R&D initiatives, and abandonment programs.
Monitor and report on AFE and project spending, proactively identifying budget variances, cost overruns, and supporting budget change requests and supplementary AFEs.
Maintain SAP investment management structures, including WBS and cost center hierarchies, load and release approved capital budgets, and ensure compliance with AFE standards and expenditure coding requirements.

Other Financial related activities & Analysis

Lead monthly forecasting, budgeting, and financial reporting processes for assigned assets, ensuring timely and accurate financial information for decision-making.
Analyze operating costs, business performance, and key financial metrics, providing insights on variances, risks, opportunities, and strategies to improve operational and financial results.
Maintain financial integrity through accurate accounting, balance sheet governance, financial controls, and compliance with reporting, audit, and governance requirements.
Partner with business and finance teams to support financial planning, monthly close activities, KPI reporting, and preparation of presentations for senior leadership.
Act as a subject matter expert on joint venture agreements and budget management processes, while driving continuous improvement of financial systems, controls, policies, and procedures.

Other

Serve as a trusted advisor to asset teams on financial governance, joint venture, and contractual matters, ensuring compliance and effective commercial decision-making.
Leverage financial, contractual, and JV expertise to protect company assets, maximize value, and support contract development, negotiations, and agreement management

Qualifications

Must Haves:

Undergraduate degree in Finance or related field from a recognized institution
Experience working with Joint Venture projects required
5-8 years’ relevant financial reporting/budgeting experience within an oil and gas exploration, development and/or operations environment
In-depth knowledge of oil and gas operations as well as relevant management reporting requirements and proven ability to deliver timely and insightful reports
Track record of operations related opportunity identification, initiative, ownership and resolution

Assets

Professional accountant designation will be considered an asset
Working knowledge of IFRS for oil and gas and/or LNG industry will be considered an asset
Hands-on experience with SAP will be considered an asset

Skills

Proven influencing and negotiation skills
Ability to effectively work in a multi-disciplinary team environment with individuals at all levels within the organization
Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral); experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to both operations management and executive leaders
Keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills
