PetroChina Canada (PCC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of PetroChina Company Limited which is partially owned by China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), a state-owned enterprise. CNPC is China's largest oil company and the world's third largest oil company, operating 91 energy-related projects in over 35 countries and regions. PCC has invested billions of dollars in an asset-rich portfolio of upstream, midstream and downstream operations. In Alberta, this includes our MacKay River and Dover oilsands projects, Duvernay Shale Gas and a 50% interest in the Grand Rapids Pipeline. In British Columbia, we hold joint venture interests in the Groundbirch tight gas project and LNG Canada.

The Senior IT System Administrator is responsible for comprehensive management, maintenance, and security of the organization’s IT and OT system infrastructure, including servers, storage systems, operating systems, user access, M365 and meeting room IT equipment. This role ensures system reliability, performance, and compliance through regular inspections, proactive monitoring, and structured administrative processes.

Accountabilities

The accountabilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

Server & Storage Infrastructure Management
Deploy, configure, and maintain virtual and physical servers across corporate IT and OT environments, about 100 virtual servers on Azure/AWS cloud, about 100 virtual servers on premises, about 20 physical servers
Manage storage solutions (e.g., NetApp) including provisioning, capacity planning, and performance optimization.
Conduct regular health checks on physical servers and storage hardware; identify and replace failed components.
Maintain and monitor virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware) to ensure efficient utilization of CPU, memory, storage, and network resources.
User & Access Management
Manage the full lifecycle of about 300 user accounts across systems covering Active Directory, Azure Entra ID, including creation, modification, synchronization, and deactivation.
Ensure timely and accurate updates to access rights based on role changes or employee status.
Perform regular access reviews and audits to maintain security and compliance.
Administer identity/accounts with Active Directory, Azure Entra ID, perform directory synchronization, identity federation by SSO, and troubleshoot related issues.
System Monitoring & Routine Inspections
Perform scheduled system inspections (daily/weekly/monthly) to verify server health, storage status, and backup integrity.
Monitor system availability and performance using standard tools; respond to alerts and anomalies.
Proactively identify potential issues (e.g., capacity thresholds, hardware warnings) and recommend corrective actions.
Maintain system documentation, including configuration baselines, inspection logs, and change records.
Backup, Recovery & Business Continuity
Administer backup and recovery systems (e.g., Commvault, Veeam, Azure Backup) for both IT and OT environments.
Regularly test backup restoration processes to ensure data recoverability.
Participate in disaster recovery planning and execution as needed.
Recommend and provide procurement requirements to ensure business continuity
Security & Compliance Support
Support vulnerability scanning and penetration testing activities; apply patches and security updates as required.
Ensure server, storage and accounts configurations align with internal security policies.
Assist in audit preparations and remediation of security findings.
Microsoft Platform Support
Administer and support Microsoft 365 (Exchange Online, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint Online)
Manage hybrid Exchange setup and administration.
Manage M365 user and license
Manage data including loss prevention, retention policies, eDiscovery requests
Meeting Room IT Equipment Administration
Manage the full lifecycle of meeting room IT equipment, including projectors, displays conference cameras, microphones, speakers, and other audiovisual (AV) devices.
Plan and coordinate equipment upgrade and replacement projects, including requirement gathering, vendor selection, procurement, budget coordination, organizing installation and testing.
Maintain an up-to-date inventory of meeting room IT assets, including device models, purchase dates, warranty status, and replacement schedules.

8. Helpdesk Escalation & Team Collaboration

Act as second-tier support for helpdesk escalations related to servers, access, storage, and Microsoft 365.
Collaborate with other IT team members to resolve complex infrastructure issues.
Participate in knowledge transfer and documentation to improve team efficiency.

Qualifications

Post-secondary diploma or degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
Minimum of 10 years of hands-on experience working with the following technologies:

Hypervisor platforms: VMware
Microsoft technologies: Active Directory, Windows Server, hybrid Exchange
Storage solutions: NetApp
Backup and recovery systems: Commvault, Veeam, and Azure Backup
Citrix technologies: XenApp, XenDesktop, and ADC/NetScaler
Microsoft 365: Exchange Online, Teams, OneDrive, and SharePoint Online
Cloud platforms: Microsoft Azure, AWS
