Original job description

PETRONAS Canada is one of the largest natural gas resource owners in Canada. We have operations in the Montney play in northeast British Columbia and are a partner in LNG Canada. As part of PETRONAS, a dynamic global energy group with presence in over 100 countries, we are well-positioned to provide global markets with responsibly-developed Canadian energy while supporting local jobs, collaborating with Indigenous communities and protecting the environment.

At PETRONAS Canada, we are committed to building Canada’s energy future – and people are fundamental to our success. We foster a culture of open collaboration and empowerment across our team of skilled professionals, while supporting career development opportunities. We are looking for can-do problem solvers to join our team who are innovative and passionate about driving strong safety, operational and sustainability performance in everything we do. Our unique culture and commitment to growth makes the company a great place to build your career.

THE ROLE:

PETRONAS Canada is a great place to launch a career that is enriched with knowledge, technical skills and mentorship. Our summer student program provides an opportunity to experience real-world challenges, collaborate with diverse teams, network with other students and create a vision for your future career path.

Reporting to the Director, Indigenous Relations in Calgary, this will be a full-time student position from May through August 2027. During your summer, you will gain exposure to the energy industry by attending sessions hosted by subject matter experts and will have an opportunity to showcase your learnings with your student network. We are looking for capable, energetic, and driven individuals to join us in our passion for progress. Expand your potential with us!

HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE:

Building and maintaining Nation by Nation and stakeholder profiles for PETRONAS Canada’s operating and growth areas in British Columbia, covering governance and leadership structure, treaty status, agreements in place and publicly stated positions, and consolidating findings into the company’s existing stakeholder register
Maintaining a regular watch on the public record across Northeast British Columbia and the North and Northwest coast, including regulatory filings, Nation and community publications, council decisions and media coverage, and flagging developments that change the engagement picture
Supporting the PETRONAS Canada Indigenous Education Awards Program end to end, including guiding applicants through the application process, tracking applications in Excel and Wufoo, maintaining selection criteria, scoring templates and decision records, and communicating outcomes to applicants in a timely and respectful way
Building the outcome record for community investment, capturing for each funded initiative who it reached, what it delivered and what partners said about it, so that reporting can describe impact and not only spend
Maintaining a commitment tracker covering what PETRONAS Canada has committed to, to whom, under which agreement and when it falls due
Preparing presentations, briefing notes and research summaries for PETRONAS leadership and external stakeholders to support decision making and strategic engagement
Supporting the planning and delivery of community events and engagement activities, including travel within British Columbia

WHAT YOU BRING:

Actively enrolled in an undergraduate degree or diploma program at a Canadian post-secondary institution, and must be returning to studies after the work term
Enrolled in a related program such as Indigenous Studies, Political Science, Law, Social Sciences, Communications, Public Relations, Business Administration, Geography, Natural Resource Management, Sustainability, Corporate Social Responsibility, or other similar programs
Research and source discipline, with the ability to find primary sources, cite them accurately, and distinguish what is on the public record from what is not
Confident using Excel and PowerPoint as working tools, structuring and maintaining data in a register rather than only formatting it
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; organized and adaptable, with strong time management, and able to work well in a team and independently
Curious about community investment and Indigenous relations in the energy sector, with sound judgement and discretion in handling sensitive relationship information
Preference will be given to students with a working knowledge of First Nations governance in British Columbia, whether in the Treaty 8 region of Northeast BC, the North and Northwest coast, or both. Some travel within British Columbia may be required

Job postings are typically only open for applications for one week so please submit your resume, cover letter, and transcript today.

WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN OUR TEAM:

Flexible work arrangements which include a compressed work week with Friday afternoons off for office-based roles
Dress for your day - a casual yet professional environment
Meaningful, challenging and rewarding work experience, relevant to your field of study
Learn from knowledgeable mentors who will provide you with insight into what it will be like to work in your chosen career
Ability to contribute to a dynamic organization with large growth ambitions
Competitive compensation
Work for a company that is making a positive difference in our communities through volunteerism, community support and providing opportunities to those in the areas where we work

PETRONAS Canada would like to thank all applicants for their interest in joining our team; however only the candidates selected for interviews will be contacted.
