Original job description

PETRONAS Canada is one of the largest natural gas resource owners in Canada. We have operations in the Montney play in northeast British Columbia and are a partner in LNG Canada. As part of PETRONAS, a dynamic global energy group with presence in over 100 countries, we are well-positioned to provide global markets with responsibly-developed Canadian energy while supporting local jobs, collaborating with Indigenous communities and protecting the environment.

At PETRONAS Canada, we are committed to building Canada’s energy future – and people are fundamental to our success. We foster a culture of open collaboration and empowerment across our team of skilled professionals, while supporting career development opportunities. We are looking for can-do problem solvers to join our team who are innovative and passionate about driving strong safety, operational and sustainability performance in everything we do. Our unique culture and commitment to growth makes the company a great place to build your career.

THE ROLE:

PETRONAS Canada is a great place to launch a career that is enriched with knowledge, technical skills and mentorship. Our summer student program provides an opportunity to experience real-world challenges, collaborate with diverse teams, network with other students and create a vision for your future career path.

Working with our Trading Risk team in Calgary, this will be a full-time student position from May through August 2027. During your summer, you will gain exposure to the energy industry by attending sessions hosted by subject matter experts and will have an opportunity to showcase your learnings with your student network. We are looking for capable, energetic, and driven individuals to join us in our passion for progress. Expand your potential with us!

HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE:

Support daily market and credit risk monitoring activities, including exposure reporting, mark-to-market (MTM) analysis, position monitoring, and counterparty credit exposure tracking
Assist with the preparation of credit reviews, counterparty assessments, and ongoing monitoring of financial performance, credit ratings, and industry developments
Monitor compliance with approved credit limits, identify potential breaches, and support escalation and mitigation activities where required
Develop and maintain risk dashboards, reports, and analytical tools using Excel, Power BI, or other data visualization platforms
Perform data validation and reconciliation activities to ensure the accuracy and integrity of trading, pricing, risk, and credit data
Analyze commodity market fundamentals and key market drivers to support risk assessments across energy trading portfolios
Collaborate with traders, commercial teams, finance, and risk stakeholders to support effective risk management and informed decision-making

WHAT YOU BRING:

Actively enrolled in a Finance, Economics, Business, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline undergraduate degree or diploma program at a Canadian post-secondary institution in Canada, and must be returning to undergraduate studies after completion of the work term
Strong analytical and quantitative skills with the ability to interpret financial, operational, and market data
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including formulas, pivot tables, data analysis, and reporting techniques
Understanding of financial statements, credit analysis, risk management principles, or commodity markets is considered an asset
Experience with Power BI, Python, SQL, VBA, or other data analytics and visualization tools is preferred
Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across trading, commercial, finance, and risk teams

Job postings are typically only open for applications for one week so please submit your resume, cover letter, and transcript today.

WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN OUR TEAM:

Flexible work arrangements which include a compressed work week with Friday afternoons off for office-based roles
Dress for your day - a casual yet professional environment
Meaningful, challenging and rewarding work experience, relevant to your field of study
Learn from knowledgeable mentors who will provide you with insight into what it will be like to work in your chosen career
Ability to contribute to a dynamic organization with large growth ambitions
Competitive compensation
Work for a company that is making a positive difference in our communities through volunteerism, community support and providing opportunities to those in the areas where we work

PETRONAS Canada would like to thank all applicants for their interest in joining our team; however only the candidates selected for interviews will be contacted.
