Original job description
Department: Hardware Engineering
Location: British Columbia, Canada (Hybrid)
Compensation: CA$117,000 - CA$161,000 / year
Description
We are looking for a Senior RF Engineer to join our hardware team and own the electromagnetic design, simulation, and validation of on-chip and chip-scale RF structures that deliver control signals to quantum devices operating at cryogenic temperatures.
In this role, you will drive measurable improvements in RF performance and power efficiency, taking designs from first-principles analysis through simulation, fabrication, and cryogenic measurement. This position is ideal for an engineer who enjoys hands-on EM design, thrives on hard physics problems, and wants to work closely with device, fabrication, packaging, and systems teams.
Please include a cover letter with your resume (in one file) describing how you would be a great fit at Photonic and what attributes you could bring to our growing team.
What We Need You To Do
- Design and optimize on-chip and chip-scale RF structures, including transmission lines, resonators, and passive coupling structures
- Perform full-wave EM modeling (HFSS / CST / COMSOL or similar), including near-field analysis of fields delivered to target devices
- Improve RF power efficiency of control structures, balancing performance against fabrication constraints and yield
- Evaluate alternative architectures and heat-load tradeoffs at the chip, package, and cryogenic system level
- Own simulation-to-measurement correlation, including cryogenic characterization, and iterate designs accordingly
- Support impedance control, matching, and RF loss analysis at the chip and package level
- Lead design reviews and produce clear technical documentation
- M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field with ~5+ years of RF or EM design experience (or B.Sc. with equivalent industry experience)
- Strong fundamentals in electromagnetics, transmission line theory, and impedance matching
- Deep hands-on experience with full-wave EM simulation (e.g., Ansys HFSS, CST, COMSOL)
- Experience designing RF structures on silicon, interposers, or thin-film substrates
- Hands-on RF measurement and characterization (VNA, spectrum analyzer, S-parameter de-embedding)
- Proven track record correlating simulation with measurement and closing the gap through design iteration
- Scripting in Python or MATLAB for simulation automation and data analysis
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience with cryogenic or low-temperature RF systems
- Familiarity with superconducting or low-loss thin films and multilayer substrates
- Experience with quantum devices or spin/qubit control hardware
- Awareness of microfabrication processes and design-for-manufacturability
- Exposure to startup or research-driven environments
- Get involved with a quantum startup company set to redefine computing
- Work closely with some of the brightest innovators in quantum technologies
- Enjoy a fast-paced and fun environment where you can try new things while solving innovative challenges every day
- Inclusive company culture
- Competitive salary, benefits (including life insurance, extended health, dental, long term disability, and a flexible spending account), and potential upside
More about this job
Responsibilities
Design, simulate, and optimize on-chip and chip-scale RF structures for quantum devices, improving RF performance and power efficiency while accounting for fabrication, yield, and cryogenic heat-load constraints. Lead simulation-to-measurement correlation, cryogenic characterization, design iteration, impedance and loss analysis, design reviews, and technical documentation.
Requirements
Requires an M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field and approximately five or more years of RF or EM design experience, or a B.Sc. with equivalent industry experience. Candidates should have strong electromagnetics and transmission-line fundamentals, hands-on full-wave simulation and RF measurement experience, simulation-to-measurement correlation skills, and Python or MATLAB scripting ability.
