Field Engineer

Salary 90k to 120k per annum
The Field Engineer supports design review, commissioning, and operational troubleshooting on bus depot, commercial fleet, and shore power electrification projects; a hands-on role spanning design, construction, and operations.
Key Responsibilities
Design Support
- Support design preparation for bus depot, commercial fleet, and shore power electrification sites
- Review designs and equipment selections from a constructability, reliability, and O&M perspective
- Provide input on equipment protection schemes to support safe, reliable operation, incl protection studies
- Manage design changes during construction, including preparing and interpreting drawings, tracking red/green marks, managing cable and conduit schedules
FAT, Commissioning & SAT
- Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) for major electrical equipment, including chargers, switchgear, transformers, and BESS
- Prepare Site Acceptance Test (SAT) procedures for major electrical equipment
- Supervise OEM commissioning activities on site
- Supervise and support electrical contractor installation and testing
- Perform and/or oversee standard electrical tests, including megger (insulation resistance), hipot (dielectric withstand), and transformer/switchgear testing
- Apply working knowledge of protective relay settings and protection coordination including testing and setting of such devices
- Support point-to-point testing and communications functional checks
- Support charger commissioning - training provided; existing Level 2 or Level 3 charger commissioning experience or certification is an asset
Operations Support
- Support troubleshooting of electrical equipment and site assets - chargers, switchgear, transformers, BESS - primarily from an electrical and hardware standpoint
- Diagnose issues involving fuses, breakers, and other protective devices
- Support troubleshooting of communications between site assets and monitoring/control systems
- Liaise with OEMs and contractors on warranty and service issues as needed
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (or related discipline), an Electrical Engineering Technology diploma, or certification as an electrician with equivalent, suitable experience
- 5+ years in electrical field engineering, testing/commissioning, or a similar hands-on role, with a proven ability to troubleshoot a variety of electrical equipment
- Working knowledge of MV/LV electrical systems, switchgear, and transformers
- Understanding of protective relay settings and protection coordination principles; experience preparing protection studies is an asset
- Familiarity with standard electrical test equipment (e.g., megger, hipot)
- Understanding of protection devices (fuses, breakers, etc.) and site communications/control systems
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to coordinate across internal engineering/PM teams, OEMs, and electrical contractors
- Comfortable working on active construction sites and in operating electrical environments, following all applicable safety protocols and PPE requirements
- Valid driver's licence
- Willingness to travel to project sites across Canada, up to 50% of the time
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- Fluency in English, written and spoken
Nice to Have
- P.Eng. designation, or actively working toward one (EIT)
- Existing Level 2 or Level 3 EV charger commissioning experience or certification
- Experience with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
- Exposure to SCADA or communications protocols (e.g., Modbus, OCPP, DNP3, IEC 61850)
- Prior experience on transit, fleet, or marine electrification projects
- BC Hydro, Toronto Hydro or other utility commissioning experience
