Position Overview

POWER-tek Global is seeking an experienced Electrical Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) to provide technical review, validation and professional authentication of an electric distribution system planning study for a utility project in Edmonton, Alberta.

The assignment concerns circuit loading policy, cable loading capabilities, existing network deficiencies and long-term load growth. The selected engineer will work with the technical study team, assess the adequacy of assumptions, models, analyses and recommendations, and authenticate final engineering deliverables where justified by professional review and applicable Alberta practice requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering review and validation

  • Review the distribution circuit loading policy study, methodology, assumptions, calculations and findings.
  • Verify evaluation of existing circuit loading limits and 2/3NR cable ratings.
  • Assess identified distribution system deficiencies, loading constraints and capacity limitations.
  • Evaluate the 25-year load forecast analysis and its implications for future distribution planning.
  • Review alternative loading policies and recommendations with respect to system reliability and prudent investment.

Power system modelling review

  • Review engineering studies and simulations undertaken using CYME distribution system analysis software.
  • Check model inputs, network data, loading scenarios, assumptions and interpretation of results.
  • Identify technical deficiencies, document review observations and coordinate required corrections.

Professional review and authentication

  • Perform a sufficiently thorough and independently defensible engineering review of final study documents and supporting material.
  • Confirm that the reviewed engineering work falls within the engineer’s professional competence and meets applicable Alberta requirements.
  • Issue consolidated review comments and verify closure of material technical observations.
  • Authenticate (stamp, sign and date) final engineering deliverables only where permitted and professionally justified under applicable APEGA requirements.
  • Provide agreed technical clarifications following client review.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, preferably with a power systems focus.
  • Active Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration with APEGA in good standing (mandatory).
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in distribution utilities, power system planning or distribution engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing engineering studies and technical reports for electric utility applications.
  • Knowledge of distribution circuit loading, cable ampacity, capacity assessment, long-term forecasting and reliability.
  • Working familiarity with CYME modelling and applicable Canadian/Alberta engineering requirements.
  • Ability to accept and discharge professional responsibility for engineering work reviewed and authenticated.

  • Preferred Experience
    • Previous work with Alberta or other Canadian electric distribution utilities, including EPCOR or comparable organizations.
    • Experience preparing or reviewing distribution circuit loading policies and cable loading criteria.
    • Experience in distribution investment planning, infrastructure renewal and independent technical review.
    Expected Deliverables
    • Technical review of study report, assumptions, models and supporting calculations.
    • Consolidated technical review comments with documented resolution of significant findings.
    • Final professionally authenticated report and applicable deliverables, subject to satisfactory review and professional judgment.
    • Agreed support for subsequent client questions and clarifications.
