Original job description
Role Overview
The Mechanics Technician at Precision AI will build, test, and repair the mechanical assemblies that make up our precision spraying technologies. This is a hands-on role for someone who is comfortable in the shop and on the hardware, and who knows when to bring an engineer in to solve a problem. You will help turn engineering designs into reliable, repeatable builds.
You will report to our Lead Technical Program Manager and work closely with our mechanical and hardware engineers, who will provide the designs, drawings, and technical direction for your work.
This role is based in Calgary and will work from Precision AI’s headquarters five days a week.
Key Responsibilities
Assembly & Build
- Assemble mechanical subsystems for our spraying systems, test rigs, and prototype platforms from engineering drawings and bills of materials.
- Install and integrate components such as pumps, tanks, plumbing, nozzles, brackets, and fasteners to specification.
- Apply torque, fit, and sealing requirements consistently so every build performs the same way.
Fabrication & Prototyping
- Build and finish custom parts and fixtures using hand tools, shop equipment, and 3D printers.
- Turn engineering design changes into working prototypes quickly, so the team can test and iterate.
- Weld aluminum and steel parts and fixtures as needed to support builds.
- Keep the shop, tools, materials, and inventory organized and ready for the next build.
Testing, Troubleshooting & Rework
- Perform fit checks, leak tests, and functional tests on assemblies before and after installation.
- Diagnose mechanical faults such as leaks, misalignment, wear, and fastener or fitting failures.
- Repair and rework assemblies in the lab and in the field.
- Escalate issues beyond basic troubleshooting to engineers, with clear measurements and observations.
Documentation & Quality
- Maintain labeling, build records, and revision tracking for the assemblies you build.
- Contribute to checklists and work instructions that improve build quality and repeatability.
Relevant Experience
Required
- Alberta welder journeyperson certification (or a recognized equivalent) with hands-on experience welding aluminum and steel.
- Hands-on experience assembling and repairing mechanical systems, ideally in aerospace, robotics, agricultural equipment, automotive, or a similar manufacturing environment.
- Proficient with hand tools, power tools, and torque tools, and comfortable working to tight tolerances.
- Able to read mechanical drawings, assembly instructions, and bills of materials.
- Working knowledge of fasteners, fittings, plumbing, and fluid handling components, plus pneumatic cylinders and lubrication best practices, ideally from farm or agricultural equipment.
- Experience troubleshooting mechanical issues on real hardware, such as leaks, misalignment, and wear.
- Strong attention to detail, with good judgment on when to escalate and clear communication when you do.
- Diploma or certificate in mechanical technology, machining, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
Bonus
- Experience with CNC machining, manual mill or lathe work, or welding.
- Familiarity with 3D printing and basic CAD tools.
- Experience with pumps, nozzles, or fluid delivery systems.
- Experience with equipment operating in outdoor or high-vibration environments.
- Experience supporting field testing or field repairs.
