About the opportunity
PRI is a multidisciplinary engineering and environmental consulting firm with offices across British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Nova Scotia. We are seeking an Intermediate Structural Engineer to design, analyze, and support the delivery of structural projects across our building, institutional, industrial, and resource-sector work, serving clients from coast to coast.
This is a hands-on technical role for a structural engineer who is comfortable carrying a design from concept through construction documents and into the field. You will develop structural designs and calculations, prepare drawings and specifications, support tendering and construction administration, and collaborate closely with PRI's civil, geotechnical, and environmental teams, while building toward greater project ownership and mentoring junior staff.
The structural practice serves municipalities, institutional and industrial clients, developers, and resource-sector clients, delivering new building design, renovation and retrofit, structural assessments, and construction support across projects located in every region PRI operates in.
Who this role is for
You are a structural engineer with a solid design foundation who is ready to take on more project responsibility: someone who can develop a structural design independently, stand behind their calculations, and coordinate confidently with architects, contractors, and other engineering disciplines. You are equally comfortable at a workstation running an analysis model as you are on a site visit reviewing construction progress, and you take real satisfaction in seeing a design you worked on get built.
What you'll do
Structural design and analysis
- Design and analyze structural systems in steel, concrete, wood, and masonry for new buildings, additions, renovations, and industrial structures, using CSA and National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) requirements as the baseline across all provinces served.
- Perform structural modeling and analysis using software such as ETABS, SAP2000, RISA, STAAD.Pro, or RAM, and independently check and interpret the results.
- Carry out structural assessments and condition evaluations of existing buildings and structures, including load rating, seismic evaluation, and retrofit design.
- Prepare structural design calculations and design briefs that meet PRI's quality standards and applicable building code and client requirements in the project's jurisdiction.
Construction documents and contract administration
- Prepare structural drawings, details, and specifications for tender and construction, using AutoCAD and/or Revit, and coordinate them with architectural and other engineering disciplines' drawings.
- Respond to requests for information, review shop drawings and submittals, and issue field review and site instruction documentation during construction.
- Conduct site visits and field reviews during construction to confirm the work conforms to the structural design intent, and document findings for the project record.
- Support tendering and bid evaluation by preparing structural scopes, quantities, and technical input for construction cost estimates.
Project and client coordination
- Act as a day-to-day technical contact for clients, architects, and contractors on assigned projects, keeping project schedules and budgets on track.
- Collaborate with PRI's civil, geotechnical, and environmental teams on multidisciplinary projects, coordinating structural design with site, foundation, and environmental constraints.
- Travel to project and construction sites across Canada as project needs require, including occasional work outside the home province.
- Contribute to proposals, fee estimates, and scopes of work for structural assignments.
Technical development and mentorship
- Mentor and review the work of junior engineers, EITs, and drafters, and support their development toward professional registration.
- Participate in internal design reviews and quality assurance/quality control checks on structural deliverables before they go to clients or regulators.
- Stay current with changes to the National Building Code of Canada, provincial code variations, and relevant CSA standards, and share that knowledge with the broader structural team.
- Contribute to building PRI's structural design standards, templates, and tools as the practice grows nationally.
Who we're looking for
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, and registration (or eligibility for registration) as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in at least one Canadian province.
- Minimum 4–7 years of structural engineering experience, with a demonstrated record of independently designing structural systems for buildings or industrial structures.
- Working proficiency with structural analysis software such as ETABS, SAP2000, RISA, STAAD.Pro, or RAM, and with AutoCAD and/or Revit for drawing production.
- Solid working knowledge of the National Building Code of Canada and the structural CSA standards (CSA S16 for steel, CSA A23.3 for concrete, CSA S304 for masonry, and CSA O86 for wood), with the ability to apply provincial code variations.
- Experience preparing construction documents and supporting construction administration, including site reviews and response to field conditions.
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to project and construction sites across Canada, including occasional multi-day trips.
Preferred
- Experience across more than one building type or sector, such as institutional, industrial, resource-sector, or municipal infrastructure projects.
- Professional Engineer registration, or demonstrated eligibility for registration by mobility, in more than one Canadian province.
- Experience with seismic design or seismic retrofit of existing structures.
- Familiarity with Revit-based multidisciplinary coordination and BIM workflows.
- Demonstrated interest or early experience mentoring junior engineers or EITs.
Why PRI
- The opportunity to carry structural projects from design through construction across a genuinely national portfolio of work.
- A collaborative environment that connects structural engineering with civil, geotechnical, environmental, and geomatics disciplines across the firm.
- A clear path toward greater project ownership, multi-jurisdictional registration support, and senior technical roles as PRI's structural practice grows.
- Exposure to a wide range of project types and sectors rather than a single building type or client base.
- Competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, and genuine support for ongoing professional development and professional designation costs.
PRI is an equal-opportunity employer committed to building a diverse and inclusive team. We welcome applications from all qualified candidates, and we encourage applications from Indigenous professionals.
