Primary Engineering and Construction Corporation is building a team to deliver natural gas engineering services for projects across Alberta. The Gas Distribution and Facilities Designer will develop and coordinate distribution pipeline and facility designs under individual project assignments.
The role is responsible for safe, reliable, and cost-effective natural gas distribution infrastructure. Work involves engineering design, pipeline routing, station sizing, hydraulic modeling, material selection, and coordination with municipal and utility stakeholders for customer additions, franchise relocations, and system renewal projects.
Responsibilities
- Review work requests, existing records, survey information, utility data, site constraints, and applicable client requirements to establish the design basis and identify missing inputs.
- Prepare designs for natural gas distribution mains, service extensions, subdivisions, replacements, relocations, and feeder projects as assigned.
- Support station and facility work such as piping layouts, valves, meter and regulator arrangements, site plans, equipment replacement, and interfaces with cathodic protection, electrical, and automation specialists.
- Develop calculations, drawings, material lists, specifications, cost estimates, construction packages, and design records appropriate to each assignment; coordinate drafting and check outputs before issue.
- Apply utility standards and project specifications for materials, pipe and fittings, pressure testing, coatings, station design, and facility integrity where relevant.
- Coordinate surveys, geotechnical input, crossings, land and permitting requirements, constructability reviews, and field verification with the responsible specialists.
- Identify safety, environmental, operational, and construction risks; document assumptions and changes, resolve review comments, and support field questions and record updates.
- Plan assigned work against agreed scope, schedule, and budget; maintain clear communication with the client and internal team.
Qualifications
- Diploma in engineering technology or degree in mechanical, civil, petroleum, or a related engineering discipline; equivalent directly relevant gas utility design experience will be considered.
- Experience designing natural gas distribution pipelines or related gas facilities in Alberta, including preparation of construction drawings and design documentation.
- Working knowledge of CSA Z662, applicable Alberta regulatory requirements, utility design standards, and engineering quality control practices.
- Ability to interpret pressure class, pipe material selection, fittings, valves, crossings, clearances, testing, and installation requirements within the assigned scope.
- Proficiency with MicroStation, AutoCAD or comparable drafting tools and Microsoft Office; ability to learn client systems and maintain accurate design records.
- Clear written and verbal communication, sound coordination skills, and a commitment to field and office safety.
- Valid driver’s licence and ability to attend Alberta project sites when required.
Qualifications That Would Help You Succeed
- Experience with ATCO Gas and Pipelines design guides, work processes, and construction packages.
- Experience with polyethylene and steel distribution systems, station piping and metering, cathodic protection interfaces, or facility upgrades.
- Exposure to transmission pipeline projects, facility integrity assessments, risk studies, geotechnical coordination, or trenchless installation.
- APEGA professional registration or eligibility, or registration as a certified engineering technologist, appropriate to the responsibilities of the role.
- Experience mentoring designers, reviewing drawings, and coordinating multiple concurrent work releases.
