Original job description

Professional Staffing has been engaged to secure a Director of External Reporting & Consolidation on behalf of an established, multi-segment Canadian retail and consumer packaged goods enterprise trading across both Canadian and U.S. exchanges.

Operating a nationwide storefront network, dedicated production facilities, and an active investment portfolio, the enterprise represents a multifaceted, transaction-rich corporate environment.

Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President, Accounting and External Reporting, this individual serves as a business-critical leader spearheading enterprise-wide financial close amalgamations and continuous disclosure obligations. The mandate spans multiple commercial operating segments, joint venture entities, and cross-border regulatory frameworks.

The Director oversees statutory accuracy under IFRS, rigorous SOX compliance, monthly financial consolidations across currencies, and timely filings across Canadian and American securities platforms (SEDAR and EDGAR). Leading a corporate accounting team, this executive collaborates closely with executive leadership, the Audit Committee, and external partners to maintain institutional-grade financial reporting.

Compensation & Total Rewards

  • Base Salary: $180,000 – $200,000
  • Annual Incentive: 25% target annual performance bonus
  • Equity Participation: 20% stock option allocation
  • Benefits: Full executive health, dental, vision, and paramedical coverage

Scope of Responsibilities

External Disclosure & Securities Compliance

  • Direct the synthesis, review, and publication of annual and interim IFRS consolidated financial statements, accompanying footnote disclosures, and Management’s Discussion and Analysis (MD&A), ensuring rigorous disclosure of key transactions, operational metrics, and critical accounting judgments.
  • Oversee document lifecycles and revision tracking across legal counsel, executive leadership, and independent auditors up to formal filing sign-off.
  • Coordinate cross-border continuous disclosure workflows, directing continuous compliance with Canadian and U.S. regulatory regimes (including SEDAR and EDGAR submissions alongside required XBRL tagging).
  • Validate the financial substance of corporate news releases, stakeholder presentations, and digital corporate disclosures against filed statements.
  • Track emerging IFRS pronouncements and regulatory revisions, teaming with Technical Accounting to translate changes into updated group accounting policies and disclosure updates.
  • Author executive-ready packages for quarterly Audit Committee sessions and respond to technical inquiries raised by leadership.
  • Champion functional development by mentoring team members, establishing clear operational goals, and setting standards for continuous accuracy.

Corporate Consolidation & Performance Reporting

  • Steer recurring close and consolidation cycles covering domestic and international subsidiaries, operational divisions, top-level journal entries, intercompany accounts matching, foreign exchange revaluations, and equity-accounted joint ventures.
  • Produce monthly consolidated reporting packets and segmental operating summaries (spanning earnings and cash position movements) for the executive committee, articulating business drivers and variance roots during monthly financial reviews.
  • Direct the monthly transfer of audited consolidation data to financial planning environments, preserving data integrity and reconciling management reporting models with public disclosures.
  • Review critical support documentation, including cash flow buildouts, joint venture balances, diluted earnings per share calculations, and intercompany settlements.
  • Supervise the accounting treatment, month-end booking, and equity schedules tied to share capital and stock-based compensation programs.

Audit Interface, Governance & Internal Controls

  • Act as the chief corporate point of contact for external audit engagements, orchestrating review milestones, driving timely query turnaround, and ensuring robust evidentiary support.
  • Architect and uphold a compliant internal controls over financial reporting (ICFR) structure aligned with SOX guidelines, overseeing walkthrough files, testing readiness, and the prompt resolution of control findings.
  • Establish standard accounting practices and validation checklists to secure predictable, repeatable close performance across cycles.
  • Direct the financial onboarding of newly acquired businesses, executing chart of accounts conversions, close schedule synchronizations, and accounting methodology alignments.

Enterprise Partnership & Digital Transformation

  • Partner collaboratively with operational finance, FP&A, Corporate Tax, Treasury, Legal, Investor Relations, and Technology teams to resolve multi-entity transactions and align company-wide metrics.
  • Advance ongoing workflow automation, targeting consolidation bottlenecks, strengthening corporate data stewardship, and modernizing reporting platforms while keeping controls intact.
  • Serve as a financial reporting subject matter resource for special corporate initiatives, including M&A structuring, debt issuances, restructurings, and enterprise system upgrades.

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Professional Credentials: Active CPA designation in good standing.
  • Background: 15+ years of progressive experience centered in public issuer financial reporting, corporate multi-entity consolidation, or national audit firm advisory, including proven team leadership within complex public companies.
  • Securities Systems: Hands-on experience navigating filing and continuous disclosure mechanisms through SEDAR and EDGAR.
  • Technical Mastery: Deep command of IFRS, consolidated group reporting, MD&A formulation, and SOX internal control frameworks; familiarity with U.S. GAAP/SEC expectations is a distinct advantage.
  • Consolidation Leadership: Demonstrated expertise orchestrating multi-tiered consolidations that incorporate foreign subsidiaries, non-wholly owned entities, complex equity structures, and share compensation accounting.
  • Stakeholder Management: Practical background partnering directly with external audit partners, Board Audit Committees, executive directors, and securities legal counsel.
  • Analytical Tools: Advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency is required. Prior working exposure to major enterprise ERP systems, analytics dashboards (such as Power BI), and disclosure platforms (such as Workiva) is preferred.

Key Leadership Attributes

  • Executive Judgement: Exceptional strategic decision-making ability and composure when advising organizational leaders.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous approach toward numerical accuracy, reconciliations, and documentation integrity.
  • Delivery Under Deadlines: Ability to triage competing demands, steer tight quarterly close timelines, and produce consistent results under statutory deadlines.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Aptitude for articulating complex accounting nuances clearly to commercial and operational counterparts.
  • Modernization Mindset: A proactive desire to optimize manual processes through automation, clean data models, and scalable governance frameworks.
