THE OPPORTUNITY
The Cost Accountant will build and own Sirius Controls’ cost accounting function within a growing, highly technical manufacturing environment. This is a hands-on role for an experienced manufacturing Cost Accountant who understands not only how to operate within an established costing system, but how to design, implement, and improve one.
The role reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer and will work closely with Operations, Production, Supply Chain, Engineering, Estimating, Warehouse, and Finance. The successful candidate will be embedded in the day-to-day manufacturing environment, developing a detailed understanding of how Sirius products are built and how material, labour, overhead, and other production costs flow through the business.
The successful candidate will serve as the internal subject-matter expert for manufacturing costing, helping establish the costing framework, production routings, cost structures, controls, and reporting required to provide accurate and granular visibility into product costs and margins. Initially, the role will focus on ERP implementation, process documentation, costing design, and developing the foundation for full absorption costing. Following ERP go-live, the Cost Accountant will assume full ownership of standard costing, production variance analysis, inventory valuation, cost reporting, and product profitability analysis.

RESPONSIBILITIES
In support of the organization's strategic objectives, the successful candidate will be accountable for the following key responsibilities:
Cost Accounting & Product Costing
- Design, implement, and maintain the Company’s standard costing framework, including material, labour, indirect costs, and manufacturing overhead.
- Maintain product cost structures aligned with bills of materials (BOMs), production routings, and manufacturing processes.
- Perform standard cost roll-ups and ensure standards remain aligned with changes in material inputs, labour requirements, and production processes.
- Establish full absorption costing practices that provide accurate visibility into finished goods costs and product margins.
- Analyze cost of goods sold and gross margins across products, customers, product lines, and regions.
Variance Analysis & Operational Reporting
- Produce and analyze production cost reporting comparing standard costs to actual production costs.
- Investigate manufacturing variances, including purchase price, labour efficiency, usage, overhead absorption, and work order variances.
- Partner with Operations to identify root causes of variances and provide meaningful cost insights that support operational efficiency and margin improvement.
- Establish appropriate investigation thresholds and a regular reporting cadence for operational review.
- Support management and board reporting related to product costs and profitability.
ERP Implementation & Systems Development
- Serve as the costing subject-matter expert throughout the ERP implementation.
- Participate in ERP configuration related to standard costing, cost structures, cost centres, inventory, and general ledger integration.
- Support item master cleanup, BOM and routing validation, costing data migration, and other activities required to establish accurate product costing within the ERP.
- Participate in costing module testing, user acceptance testing, and parallel-run reconciliation.
- Ensure costing outputs integrate effectively with financial and management reporting requirements.
Inventory, Processes & Internal Controls
- Support accurate valuation of raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods, including inventory reconciliations and variance investigations.
- Review inventory transactions and work closely with Warehouse and Production to ensure inventory movements and manufacturing activity are accurately captured.
- Document key operational and financial processes, including Procure-to-Pay, inventory management, the cost accounting cycle, and Order-to-Cash.
- Strengthen documentation and internal controls related to inventory, manufacturing, and cost accounting, supporting ongoing audit readiness.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Become embedded within the Operations and Manufacturing teams and act as the primary cost-accounting partner to operational leadership.
- Partner closely with Production, Engineering, Supply Chain, Purchasing, Warehouse, and Finance to understand product cost drivers and operating performance.
- Work with Engineering and Manufacturing to understand BOMs, production routings, and how product and process changes impact costs.
- Support Estimating and quoting activities by validating cost assumptions and product cost models.
- Provide financial insight into operational efficiency, cost improvement opportunities, margins, and product profitability.
MEASURES OF SUCCESS
- Standard Costing: Establishes and implements a reliable standard costing framework incorporating material, labour, overhead, production routings, and other relevant manufacturing costs, providing greater visibility into product costs and margins.
- ERP Implementation: Successfully contributes to the implementation of the ERP system by June 2027, ensuring the costing environment is accurately configured, tested, and integrated with financial and operational reporting.
- Operational Integration: Becomes fully embedded with the Operations and Manufacturing teams and is viewed as a trusted cost-accounting subject-matter expert who understands the operational drivers behind costs and provides meaningful insight to support decision-making.
THE INDIVIDUAL
Given the pivotal role this individual will be expected to play in building the Company’s cost accounting function and supporting the success of the organization, it is essential that the successful candidate possess the following education, experience, competencies, and attributes:
Education
- Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline.
- Experience in-lieu of education will be considered.
Experience
- 5+ years of progressive cost accounting experience, with meaningful experience specifically within a manufacturing environment.
- Strong technical knowledge of standard costing, full absorption costing, cost roll-ups, labour and overhead allocation, inventory valuation, and manufacturing variance analysis.
- Demonstrated experience building, implementing, or materially improving cost accounting systems, processes, or methodologies, rather than solely operating within an established costing environment.
- Experience establishing or implementing standard costing within a manufacturing environment.
- Experience supporting an ERP implementation, costing module implementation, or significant systems transformation.
- Experience working with bills of materials (BOMs), production routings, work orders, and manufacturing cost structures.
- Experience partnering closely with Operations and Production to understand manufacturing processes, investigate cost variances, and identify their underlying operational drivers.
- Experience working with ERP systems within a manufacturing environment.
- Experience within oil & gas, energy services, industrial equipment, instrumentation, or a related manufacturing environment is considered an asset.
- Ability to operate independently as a cost accounting subject-matter expert with limited technical oversight.
