Job Summary

The Chargehand, Carpenter performs skilled carpentry at the journeyman level in accordance with applicable building codes and bylaws for a majority of the time; provides supervision to carpenters, painters, locksmiths, maintenance workers and other designated staff, and performs related administrative duties; facilitates the resolution of work problems by using recognized methodologies and liaising with clients; participates in the development and monitoring of preventative maintenance programs including the use of a computerized maintenance management system.
Duties/Accountabilities
- Supervises designated carpenters, painters, locksmiths, maintenance workers and other staff by scheduling and coordinating work assignments, evaluating employee performance and determining related training and orientation requirements; inspects work and provides guidance/technical advice to facilitate resolutions to work problems to ensure compliance with established hospital/WorkSafe BC and other relevant standards/regulations; instructs and/or demonstrates correct work methods; compiles and records performance incidents and refers to the Supervisor.
- Reviews work requests and consults with user departments regarding specifications and other project requirements; develops project/job plan by determining any and all implications and any hospital systems that will be affected; communicates with clients and plans for temporary alternate work and system arrangements; interprets drawings and specifications to determine materials and equipment required; calculates materials and labour in estimating cost of projects and makes recommendations as required.
- Recommends changes or replacements to equipment, processes, material or maintenance through the assessment of operations, procedures and processes using problem solving methodologies to document and identify root causes; suggests improvements to enhance efficiencies and/or cost effectiveness and provides input to the budget for assigned area.
- Participates in the establishment and monitoring of preventative maintenance programs by establishing/updating preventative maintenance tasks and schedules using the computerized maintenance management system and assigning staff to these tasks; checks on the level of adherence to the preventative maintenance program by reviewing documentation and assists in determining the causes when schedules are not met.
- Provides training and orientation to staff by performing duties such as providing instruction and demonstration; provides input to the Supervisor regarding staff performance; participates in hiring panels as requested by reviewing applications, conducting interviews in conjunction with the Supervisor, testing candidates and providing hiring recommendations.
- Communicates and liaises with clients/user departments and other Facility Maintenance and Operations staff to gather information, resolve concerns and coordinate work that will impact other activities/areas; provides information regarding the status of work requests and attends interdepartmental meetings to represent and provide input to meet the operational requirements of the area.
- Coordinates the work of outside contractors to ensure adherence to specifications and other facility requirements; liaises with consultants by providing technical information regarding hospital systems; reviews consultant reports/recommendations and provides feedback/input.
- Prepares for work projects by arranging work schedules with user departments and assembling supplies, tools and equipment; performs skilled carpentry work in accordance with applicable building codes and bylaws in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of building structural elements, door hardware and locks, fixtures, and furniture using power tools such as mitre saws, table saws, routers, jointers, and sanders and hand tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, squares, chisels, levels, hand saws, clamps and planes.
- Maintains an inventory of supplies, equipment and tools; completes associated reports and records; evaluates/recommends purchase or related equipment and supplies; requisitions supplies and equipment, as needed.
- Oversees and updates standards/procedures by reviewing documentation/recent literature, communicating/instructing changes to the staff and updating computerized and manual records; maintains and verifies a variety of records including timesheets for designated staff and the documentation library for records such as building plans and diagrams by completing forms, filing documentation, and operating computerized databases.
- Carries out regular safety checks on equipment to ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations; maintains an inventory of supplies, equipment and tools; completes related reports and records; recommends purchase of related supplies and equipment; advises on matters related to the storage of parts and inventory.
- Performs journeyman work as a Carpenter when required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience
Certificate of Apprenticeship or Trades Qualification Certificate as a journeymen Carpenter recognized by the Province of B.C. Four years’ recent, related experience including two years in a supervisory capacity or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
