As such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
The 3D Printing & Clinical Engineering Manager provides strategic, operational, and technical leadership for the Clinical Technology Innovation (CTI) Program, with a specific focus on clinical engineering and rehabilitation technology roles supporting 3D printing and point-of-care medical device innovation at Children’s & Women’s sites.
Reporting to the Director, Motion Lab & Clinical Technology, this role is accountable for leading a multidisciplinary team of engineers, rehabilitation technologists, and technical specialists responsible for the design, development, validation, implementation, and lifecycle management of 3D-printed devices, custom rehabilitation solutions, and innovative clinical technologies. The Manager works closely with internal and external clinical programs, digital partners, and innovation stakeholders to negotiate and facilitate consensus on clinical requirements, priorities, and implementation approaches and to translate clinical needs into safe, effective, and scalable technology solutions
The position encompasses leadership across innovation delivery, workforce development, project and financial management, risk and quality oversight, and partnerships, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities, regulatory standards, and emerging best practices in clinical engineering and medical device innovation.
Duties/Accountabilities
- Provides leadership for the CTI 3D printing and clinical engineering portfolio, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities, clinical needs, and patient safety requirements.
- Leads planning, execution, and continuous improvement of clinical technology innovation initiatives, including custom and point-of-care manufactured solutions.
- Executes and tracks project plans for CTI initiatives, ensures successful and coordinated completion of project components, negotiates and facilitates consensus with internal and external partners regarding clinical requirements, implementation approaches, priorities, resources, and related changes, and ensures readiness for project implementation.
- Monitors and reports on the status of initiatives and major barriers encountered, makes decisions and recommendations regarding complex and diverse issues, scope, priorities, implementation approaches, and related changes, in consultation and coordination with affected programs and partners, as required to facilitate a successful outcome. Implements effective processes to assess project risks, identify risk mitigation strategies and monitor risk throughout project lifecycle.
- Executes complex infrastructure, software, or system development projects with technical leadership, including creating design documentation, organizing and supervising the creation of technical solutions or improvements, creating user training materials, and concluding analysis of client and business requirements.
- Works collaboratively with the Executive Director, Clinical Operations; the Director, Motion Lab & Clinical Technology; and CTI governance structures on strategic planning, innovation priorities, and performance monitoring.
- Leads the development of business cases, operational reviews, needs assessments, and environmental scans related to clinical technology innovation.
- Oversees the design, evaluation, implementation, and lifecycle management of 3D-printed clinical and rehabilitation devices and related technologies including recommendations that may require changes to clinical practices, workflows, or service delivery in affected programs.
- Provides senior technical direction and specialized clinical and technical consultation for engineers and rehabilitation technologists, clinical programs, and other partners engaged in CAD design, prototyping, testing, validation, and clinical translation.
- Maintains expert knowledge of emerging trends in clinical engineering, additive manufacturing, rehabilitation technology, and digital medical device development. Leads research, development and innovation activities addressing complex, unique, or time-sensitive clinical needs.
- Ensures the safe use, validation, traceability, and governance of 3D-printed clinical and rehabilitation devices, in compliance with organizational, regulatory, and accreditation requirements.
- Oversees incident investigation, hazard reporting, recall monitoring, and implementation of risk mitigation strategies related to innovative clinical technologies.
- Monitors applicable regulatory and standards bodies (e.g., Health Canada, WorkSafeBC, CSA) and integrates requirements into policies, procedures, and workflows. Supports accreditation preparation, quality improvement initiatives, and ongoing compliance related to clinical technology innovation.
- Leads, supervises, coaches, and mentors engineers, rehabilitation technologists, and technical staff, fostering a collaborative, innovation-focused, and psychologically safe work environment.
