The Nurse Educator, Oncology, facilitates excellence in patient care by functioning as a nursing practice resource for nurses at BCCA as well as to community care providers around the province in the care of persons affected by cancer. Supports nursing staff in the provision of care by using information based on specialized theory/practice, providing formal advice and education to other nursing staff and developing of decision support tools and other resources as appropriate. Consults, confers, and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team members, and other health care professional/providers to achieve excellence in person-centered care, education and research.
Duties/Accountabilities
- Demonstrates expertise and provides leadership in evidence informed nursing practice through methods such as reviewing literature, consulting with clinical experts, evaluating clinical practice, recommending changes to existing standards and guidelines, and providing information based on application of theories, concepts and principles in oncology nursing.
- Provides consultation to nursing and interdisciplinary staff to assess, plan, implement and evaluate quality care initiatives for oncology patients and families through methods such as reviewing patient/family needs, promoting collaboration with health care professionals, reviewing available health care best practice and nursing practice improvement.
- Facilitates competence development with nursing staff and by planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating oncology nursing education programs. Develops educational programs, and creates policies and procedures based on evidence and best practices in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team and according to needs and priorities of the clinical program.
- Provides consultation to and liaises with community partners by developing inter-agency linkages, to ensure smooth and integrated care between tertiary and community centres.
- Coordinates and participates in quality improvement and risk management activities through methods such as evaluating the effect of changes in patient care/nursing practice, and generating recommendations for alternative approaches to patient care/nursing practice.
- Promotes evidence based practice through collaborating with clinicians and research partners and identifies issues/practice which require research. Promotes staff awareness and facilitates opportunities to participate in research and the development of ongoing research.
- Participates on designated program-based and professional committees/teams when appropriate, provides input and engages in activities to promote improvements to nursing practice and patient care.

Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience
- Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP).
- Three (3) years recent related nursing experience encompassing assessment and treatment of oncology patients, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
Skills And Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge of nursing theory and practice with a person-centered model of care
- Comprehensive knowledge of British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP) standards and scope for nursing practice
- Comprehensive knowledge of evidence informed nursing practice related to oncology patient care and nursing practice.
- Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and best practice advocacy.
- Demonstrated ability to teach, coach and facilitate nursing education sessions.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of an interprofessional team
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with, and collaborate effectively with nursing and interprofessional colleagues from BCCA and outside agencies, and community partners. Demonstrated ability to work through difficult conversations, issues involving conflict, and maintain respectful communication
- Ability to operate related equipment, including computer software applications.
- Demonstrated intermediate level computer skills and use of Microsoft office including MS Outlook, MS Powerpoint, and MS Excel.
