Original job description

Job Title: Mi’kmaw Language Coordinator

Location of Position: Based on location of Successful Applicant.

Corner Brook, St. George’s, Stephenville, Gander, Glenwood, Grand Falls, Windsor.

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week, Temporary, ending March 31, 2027, with the possibility of extension.

Rate of Pay: $55,050.00/per annum

Job Description: The Mi’kmaq Language Coordinator will assist with the on-going development, planning and implementation of the Qalipu First Nation (QFN) Mi’kmaw Language Revival project, assist QFN staff across the organization with Mi’kmaq Language translation and support and assist with the inclusion of Mi’kmaw language in other QFN initiatives where appropriate.

Responsibilities:

Plan and schedule all language classes associated with QFN’s Language revival program, across various levels of Mi’kmaw instruction.
Update QFN’s language resources as needed
Assist with QFN’s internal and external communications that involve Mi’kmaw Language or promotion of language programs
Work alongside QFN’s various departments, Chief and Council to provide organizational wide language support
When appropriate, work with QFN’s external partners to provide language support as is outlined in QFN’s language policy
Develop language materials and compile resources to be used in various outreach initiatives
Monitor the project budget, scope and schedule
Support the continuation of QFN’s language programs and initiatives through research, proposal writing and networking
Reporting on programming progress and success
Support participants in the QFN language program through scheduling and coordination of one-on-one mentoring with the language facilitator
Promote, maintain, and advance QFN’s Language Policy
Continuation of Mi’kmaw language education to ensure personal advancement toward fluency
Other duties as directed by supervisor

Qualifications:

Education: Completion of a minimum 2-year diploma level program within a field of study related to Social Sciences, Community Studies, Education, an Arts discipline such as History or Anthropology. Consideration will be given to those applicants who possess equivalent training and experience training and experience. Some knowledge of the Smith Francis Orthography would be considered an asset.

Experience: A minimum of one (1) year of experience teaching or delivering programs for adults, children and/or youth, including experience teaching the Mi’kmaw Language. Demonstrated experience in coordinating and facilitating programs and events. Experience in community engagement and working with the Mi’kmaw population in a culturally respectful and community-centered manner. Experience in

reading, writing, and speaking Mi’kmaw, with demonstrated ability to incorporate language and culture into programming. Proficiency in Microsoft operating systems and common online communication, registration, and feedback platforms.

Working Conditions: This position primarily involves office-based duties during regular working hours. However, the successful candidate will be required to work before or after regular business hours, some weekends, and in various locations for some programs and events. A portion of the work could take place in outdoor environments with variable weather conditions, based on the programming, events and initiatives undertaken. Including but not limited to working in both indoor and outdoor environments, travelling to remote communities or within Mi’kma’ki, which could require overnight stays. Physical activity is required, including walking up to 5 kilometers per day, hiking, bending, crouching and lifting to a maximum of 30 pounds.

Employee Benefits:

Statutory and Non-Statutory Holidays: Employees are entitled to 13 days off to cover Statutory and Non-statutory holidays per year.

Office Hours: Office hours during are from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm Monday to Thursday, Friday 8:30 am to 12:30 pm.

Christmas Break: the office closes during the Christmas break, this is an added bonus that employees are entitled to.

Under 2 hours Medical Appointment: Employees may attend an appointment of less than 2 hours with no deductions to Sick and Family Medical.

Discretionary Bereavement: One day off per year for the death of a relative not included as immediate family, a close friend or neighbour.

Vacation Pay: 6% paid out bi-weekly.
