Junior Quantum Engineer
About Quantized Technologies Inc. (QTi)
The next era of computing won’t be built on a single quantum computer – it will be built by connecting them. At QTi, we believe quantum networking is the defining technology that turns isolated quantum devices into world-changing infrastructure.
We are building the future of distributed quantum computing and ultra-secure communications. Our QuEDGE Connect technology enables modular, interconnected quantum processors to scale beyond the limits of single chips, while QuEDGE Repeat lays the groundwork for a long-distance quantum internet. By converging breakthroughs in quantum memory, quantum transduction, entanglement distribution and swapping, photonics, and networking, we translate lab science into real-world commercial engineering. At the same time, we are developing quantum-secure solutions to protect the world’s most critical data during this transition.
Our team operates at the intersection of quantum physics, hardware, embedded systems, and software to tackle challenges on a generational scale. If you want to do the most impactful work of your career and help build the infrastructure that defines the next era of computing, join us.
Why Join QTi?
People are at the heart of deep-tech innovation. We’ve brought together top scientists, engineers, and operational minds to tackle some of the most complex challenges in modern physics and networking. At QTi, you’ll join a highly collaborative, fast-moving culture where your work directly shapes our brand, commercial presence, and industry footprint. We support and count on each other, take ownership of our projects, and solve hard problems together in a dynamic startup environment.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a driven and hands-on Junior Quantum Engineer to join our team. This role is ideal for a recent MSc or PhD graduate who excels in experimental quantum optics and wants to transition deep lab research into cutting-edge commercial quantum networking hardware.
Working closely with senior quantum specialists and cross-functional engineering teams, you will play a key hands-on role in designing, constructing, characterizing, and troubleshooting optical setups. You will be directly involved with optical hardware, assembling and aligning complex setups, developing single- and entangled-photon sources, and analyzing data to develop, test, and validate quantum networking solutions.
What You’ll Do
- Hardware development: Design, align, build, and troubleshoot bulk optical setups incorporating lasers, modulators, interferometers, light-matter interfaces, single-photon detectors, and time-tagging electronics.
- Entanglement & Source Validation: Construct and characterize entangled photon sources using non-linear optical processes (such as SPDC and SFWM).
- Quantum Measurements: Perform quantitative performance measurements, including pair-generation rates, spectral bandwidth, heralding efficiency, coincidence-to-accidental ratio (CAR), and entanglement visibility/fidelity.
- Instrumentation & Control: Develop and utilize scripts (Python, C)) for instrument control, automated data collection, and experimental analysis.
- System Optimization: Model, implement, and refine nonlinear optical interactions, phase matching, and collection efficiency to optimize bulk optical and fiber-based quantum setups.
- Collaborative R&D: Work closely alongside senior specialists and junior peers to document methods and outcomes, refine protocols, and support hardware procurement.
Who You Are
- Education: PhD (or MSc with exceptional laboratory experience) in Physics, Quantum Optics, Photonics, Optical Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Hands-on Experimentalist: Demonstrated hands-on experience in experimental quantum optics, single-photon detection, or optical engineering. You are an active lab experimentalist and engineer who builds and aligns setups, not purely a theoretical or computational researcher.
- Core Skill Sets: Strong foundational understanding and practical exposure to:
- Quantum optics & nonlinear optics (e.g., phase matching, light-matter interfaces, optical coherence).
- Bulk photonics & fiber-optic components and setups.
- Single-photon detection, interferometry, and coincidence timing.
- Software & Analysis: Proficiency in Python or C for data analysis, experimental modeling, and lab instrument automation.
- Problem Solver: Ability to independently troubleshoot physical optical setups, analyze experimental data, critically evaluate outcomes, and ideate solutions to challenges.
- In-Person Collaborator: Comfortable working on-site in a full-time capacity in our Calgary R&D facility, thriving in a team-oriented, hands-on lab environment.
Why You’ll Love QTi
At QTi, you’ll join a high-performing, supportive team working on world-changing technology. We offer a competitive total rewards package, including:
- Competitive base salary and eligibility for annual performance reviews.
- Comprehensive health benefits package.
- Generous paid vacation and flexible time-off policies.
- Rapid career progression and learning opportunities in a high-growth quantum tech startup.
- A vibrant, collaborative work environment in Calgary, AB.
How to Apply
If you are an experimental quantum engineer ready to help build the infrastructure that defines the future of quantum networking, please submit your CV/resume and a brief overview of your key achievements and relevant projects through our application portal.
Quantized Technologies Inc. is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We invite diversity and are committed to creating a welcoming environment for all employees.
