Position: Senior Linux Systems Engineer - Automation & Performance Monitoring (6-Month Contract)
Location: Toronto, ON (Hybrid - approximately 1 day onsite per week)
Salary: $70-$90 per hour
Job Type: 6-month contract

Posting Type: Open vacancy
Start Date: ASAP

Our client, an established organization in the financial services sector, is looking to hire a Senior Linux Systems Engineer for a 6-month contract.

This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on infrastructure engineer who enjoys building automation solutions, improving operational efficiency, and solving complex systems performance challenges.

The role will focus primarily on automating Linux infrastructure performance monitoring and reporting, alongside enhancing enterprise RHEL patching automation.

We are looking for someone who has personally designed and implemented automation solutions, rather than simply maintained existing scripts or operated monitoring tools.

Key Responsibilities:

Infrastructure Monitoring & Performance Automation (Primary Focus)
- Design and implement automated infrastructure monitoring and reporting workflows to support application load and performance testing.
- Develop Linux scripts to capture system metrics, including CPU, memory, network utilization, network errors, and infrastructure configuration.
- Automate the collection and analysis of infrastructure performance data during testing cycles.
- Integrate monitoring data from observability platforms such as New Relic, Dynatrace, or similar tools using APIs and scripting.
- Develop automated reports identifying performance bottlenecks, infrastructure changes, and potential issues.
- Collaborate with application development, QA, and infrastructure teams to investigate and troubleshoot performance issues.
- Help transform existing manual monitoring and validation processes into repeatable, automated workflows.

Linux Infrastructure & Patching Automation
- Develop, maintain, and enhance Linux infrastructure automation using Ansible and Shell/Bash scripting.
- Support automated RHEL patching processes using Red Hat Satellite and Ansible Automation Platform.
- Improve patching efficiency, scheduling, and execution across development, testing, and production environments.
- Manage patch sequencing, dependencies, Content Views, and lifecycle promotion to ensure consistent and controlled deployments.
- Integrate automated post-patching validation and sanity checks into existing workflows.
- Provide Linux systems administration and infrastructure troubleshooting support as required.

Required Qualifications:

- 7+ years of hands-on experience in Linux Systems Engineering, Infrastructure Engineering, or a similar technical role.
- Strong expertise in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) administration, troubleshooting, and performance optimization.
- Advanced scripting and automation skills using Bash/Shell and Ansible.
- Demonstrated experience designing and implementing infrastructure automation solutions from the ground up.
- Experience with Linux performance monitoring, system metrics collection, and troubleshooting across CPU, memory, networking, and application infrastructure.
- Hands-on experience with monitoring and observability platforms such as New Relic, Dynatrace, or equivalent.
- Experience integrating monitoring tools, collecting metrics through APIs, and automating reporting workflows.
- Strong understanding of Linux networking and diagnostic utilities.
- Ability to independently troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues and collaborate with cross-functional technical teams.
- Strong communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills.

Nice-to-Have Qualifications:

- Experience with Red Hat Satellite, including Content Views, lifecycle environments, and automated patch management.
- Experience developing automated infrastructure monitoring workflows during application load or performance testing.
- Experience with Jenkins and automated validation pipelines.
- Familiarity with Java application environments and application performance troubleshooting.
- Experience with GitHub Copilot or other AI-assisted scripting and development tools.
- Experience in financial services or other high-availability enterprise environments.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate is a proactive, technically strong engineer who can take ownership of automation initiatives and deliver practical solutions with minimal supervision.

You should be comfortable working directly with Linux infrastructure, writing and troubleshooting scripts, integrating monitoring tools, and identifying opportunities to eliminate manual processes.

This is not a cloud-focused DevOps or application deployment role. We are specifically looking for deep Linux systems expertise combined with strong infrastructure automation and performance monitoring experience.

If you enjoy solving infrastructure challenges through automation and want to make a tangible impact within a collaborative technical team, we'd love to hear from you.
