This role requires full time on site presence.

Your role

CBC Yukon has an amazing opportunity in Whitehorse. We’re looking for an experienced journalist to help lead a team that drives local, innovative storytelling on audio, digital, video and social platforms. We’re searching for someone who’s decisive, creative and passionate about everything that makes the Yukon what it is - people, communities, cultures, land, languages, arts, sports, politics and businesses.

The Yukon is a territory in transition, where there’s space to learn, to experience, to travel, to build a career and a life.

As a producer assigned primarily to CBC Yukon’s audio-radio shows, your central role is programming our three daily shows, working with dedicated hosts, an associate producer and reporters. You’ll assign, edit and line up segments on Yukon Morning, Midday Cafe and Airplay. You will lead daily team meetings, coordinate story chases, make decisions on audio treatments, write scripts, conduct interviews and coordinate with News, Digital and Video Producers and reporters across the North and across Canada.

You will have the opportunity to initiate ideas and projects to engage, serve and grow our audiences by reflecting and amplifying complex Northern stories. There will be latitude for initiative and creativity while adhering to CBC journalistic and/or program policies, standards, and practices. Besides initiating and producing work yourself, there is a regular and ongoing requirement to help coordinate the work of others, within CBC Yukon and with other CBC stations, shows, and hubs.

Working with an editorial leadership team led by CBC Yukon’s Executive Producer, you’ll collaborate with program staff to effectively, efficiently, and empathetically cover stories and issues affecting our diverse audience across the Yukon. Awareness and understanding of local issues and communities across the territory is essential.CBC Yukon also contributes to a N.W.T-Yukon weekend show produced and hosted out of Yellowknife.

Can you see yourself here?

You have a deep and demonstrated understanding of broadcast journalism, responsive, relevant news coverage, digital roll outs and strategic social media storytelling. You’re also keen to consider new ways of telling stories on established and emerging platforms. You understand the role of public media in connecting with and building a strong, flourishing local community. You have experience encouraging and creating content that embraces a diverse range of lived experiences.

You’re an excellent writer, and all-round communicator. You also have strong vetting skills. You’re insatiably curious, brimming with initiative. You work quickly, thoughtfully and collaboratively. You demonstrate flexibility and adaptability.

You’re also a confident, compassionate, and inclusive leader. You inspire people to bring out their best. You’ve got experience mentoring, coaching and working alongside a team that brings a broad range of experience, skills and interests. You’re paying attention to what people are talking about and you find ways to bring those voices to the table. You’re open to new ideas and to feedback.

You’re a great planner and deft organizer who can work in harmony with a small team in a high-pressure, tight-deadline environment from pitch, to gathering, to roll out. You are also committed to creating a trusting relationship with our established and emerging audiences by catalyzing, reflecting and responding to Yukon stories in our daily programming.

You understand our different platforms and how to shape a story to play into each one’s strengths. You’re on the lookout for new ways to connect, including podcasting, on-demand and streaming audio and video.
