Commercial Transactions Analyst on behalf of our client. They’re expanding their team to meet growing needs, making this a unique opportunity to work with an industry leader. Our Client, the third largest producer of Canadian oil and natural gas and the second largest refiner and upgrader with extensive midstream and downstream infrastructure.
Note: The primary pay rate is based on T4 classification; however, we will also consider applications from candidates interested in an INC classification, where applicable.
Description
The Commercial Transactions Analyst, in this role, will establish themselves as the subject matter expert for the actualization, pricing, and settlement activities within the Crude Oil / NGL portfolio. You will gather, validate, and maintain volumetric, pricing, and fee information; support front, middle, and back office teams with accurate and timely data; and work directly with counterparties to confirm all components required for settlement. Success in this role requires developing strong collaborative relationships with Trading, Scheduling, Risk, Finance, Treasury, Contract Administration, Business Development, and external partners. You will participate as a supportive and reliable team member, contribute to continuous process improvement, and demonstrate leadership within your area of responsibility. The ideal candidate brings industry experience in commodity pricing or actualizations, strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, and a willingness to seek support when needed while providing the same support to their team.
Responsibilities
- As a member of the Commodity Transactions Team, you will be responsible for the following:
- Manage volumetric data and actualization processes in ETRM systems and other applicable records
- Identify, validate, and allocate all unplanned and established fees associated with commodity movements or transactions
- Support risk management and accounting activities, including month-end processes and unmatched report management
- Collaborate with stakeholders such as trading, scheduling, and financial teams for actualized volumetric and fee-related inquiries
- Ensure data integrity, consistency, and compliance in all system records
- Identify and implement process optimizations and automation opportunities
- Maintain business continuity through documentation and training
- Prioritize timeliness and efficiency to support accurate invoicing and cash collection
- In this position you will work closely with Crude Oil/NGL Trading, Crude Oil/NGL Scheduling, Middle Office Risk, Finance, Business Development, and Treasury.
- Within the Crude Oil/NGL portfolio, specific responsibilities are expected as follows:
- Actualize Shipper Balances (purchases, sales, movements, and facility transfers)
- Actualize unplanned fees (demurrage, other)
- Manage and actualize established fees (tariffs, other)
- Manage Bill of Lading entry to ETRM and associated reconciliation for rail and truck movements
- Prepare, maintain, and distribute weekly/monthly commodity marketing pricing reports
- Update non-risk price curves in ETRM
- Administer monthly prices for proprietary transactions, including internal transfer prices for Downstream Marketing, Lloydminster Upgrader, Lloydminster Refinery, and Upstream Production
- Calculate third party transactions and confirm with external counterparties on a monthly basis
- Gather data for Price Forecasts in addition to preparing, enhancing, and distributing Forecast Models
- Reconcile volumetric movements, fees, and recovery of trucking charges
- Manage Terminal Receipts and Reporting – Operator of Crude Oil Terminals
- To enable the above,
- Work closely with trading to understand contract pricing and resolve any price disputes with counterparties
- Work closely with Scheduling to understand volume movement between pipelines/facilities, pipelines gains/losses, 3rd party/intercompany/interbook transactions
- Work closely with Business Development to understand contracted fees (tariffs, other)
Deliverables
The Commodity Transactions team ensures timely and accurate actualization and settlement of all commodity movements. In this role, you will manage volumetric data, shipper balances, Bill of Lading entries, fees, and related ETRM updates to support accurate invoicing, cash collection, and financial reporting. You will administer daily pricing reports, monthly proprietary and intercompany prices, non‑risk price curves, and third‑party price calculations, while also supporting price forecasting. Leveraging strong pricing and analytical skills, you will validate charges, resolve discrepancies, and manage price or fee disputes with counterparties in collaboration with trading, scheduling, and business development. You will work closely with cross‑functional partners to address volumetric, pricing, and fee inquiries and ensure data integrity and compliance across systems. You will also support month‑end risk and accounting processes, unmatched report management, reconciliations, and terminal receipt reporting. In addition, you will identify process and automation improvements, maintain documentation to support business continuity, and provide backup coverage while serving as subject matter expert for your assigned portfolio.
Competencies
- Crude Oil / NGL – Commodity Transaction Team competencies are as follows:
- Demonstrates advanced to expert proficiency in managing crude oil and C5+ allocations, including accurate data entry, reconciliation, and error correction for volumetric and fee data.
- Applies deep knowledge of external statements (such as BOLs, tickets, shipper balances), ETRM workflow, and process dependencies to ensure accuracy and compliance in all allocation activities.
- Possesses strong analytical skills to interpret and analyze pricing from third-party invoices and producer statements, identifying trends, discrepancies, and opportunities for process improvement.
- Maintains technical proficiency in ETRM systems and related software, with the ability to troubleshoot, manage automation processes, and contribute to system upgrades and implementations.
- Collaborates effectively with internal teams (Trading, Scheduling, Settlement, Treasury, Credit, Contract Admin, Financial Reporting, Upstream, Business Development) and serves as a knowledgeable representative when interacting with third parties to confirm pricing and resolve exceptions.
- Demonstrates clear communication skills, able to explain complex data and processes to non-technical stakeholders and provide pricing and volumetric support across teams.
- Reviews current business and system processes, proactively recommending and implementing improvements to enhance workflow efficiency and data management.
- Shows adaptability in adjusting to changes in processes, systems, and stakeholder needs, continuously developing skills to stay current with industry standards.
Qualifications
- 5+ years' experience in an analyst role related to Commodity Marketing
- Strong computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is a must
- Sound knowledge of crude oil/NGL transaction settlement procedures along with knowledge of OMS, Oil Marketing Systems (Egistix/Allegro) and Right Angle systems would be an asset
- Strong analytical skills in order to secure relevant information/data and identify key issues and relationships to determine appropriate course of action
- Excellent organizational and planning skills to set and exceed established goals, schedules, and deadlines
- Strong communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills are required to work across a number of functions
- Creative problem solving skills with the ability to identify issues and present thoughtful solutions
- Education and Certifications
- Post-secondary degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Commerce, Business Administration, or a related quantitative/analytical discipline.
- Certifications (Preferred/Asset): Professional accounting designations (such as CPA) or finance-related certificates
