Location: Vancouver, British Columbia (on-site, marine terminal)

Raise is hiring a Health and Safety Advisor on behalf of our client. They're expanding their team to meet growing needs, making this a unique opportunity to work with an industry leader. Our client is a globally competitive integrated energy company that extracts, produces, and provides energy from a mix of sources, ranging from oil sands to renewable fuels.

Note: The primary pay rate is based on T4 classification. We'll also consider applications from candidates interested in an INC classification, where applicable.

Description

Our client is looking for a Health and Safety Advisor to join operations at their Vancouver marine terminal. In this role, you'll be a visible, field-based leader who champions safety culture, guides safe work execution, and ensures strong adherence to Environment, Health, and Safety (EH&S) standards. The role is split 80% field and 20% office, with both based at the terminal. You'll spend most of your time working hand-in-hand with field personnel and contractors to reduce risk, deliver just-in-time coaching, and drive continuous improvement through Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) principles. Active project and construction work is underway at the site, so you'll support both day-to-day terminal operations and project activities.

Responsibilities

Field duties (80%):

  • Participate in safety meetings and toolbox talks: attend safety meetings and contractor toolbox talks.
  • Conduct worksite safety assessments: regularly complete Critical Control Assurance (CCA) and Enablon inspection checklists to confirm compliance with critical safety controls and protocols. Provide feedback and coaching to close gaps.
  • Complete and support work execution activities: ensure hazards are identified and appropriate controls are in place during work activities, including project and construction work.
  • Assess contractor worker qualifications: evaluate contractor workers' safety training and competencies to confirm they meet required standards.
  • Conduct field assessments on high-risk standards: assess the implementation of high-risk safety standards in the field, such as confined space entry and working at heights.
  • Provide just-in-time coaching: coach field personnel on the spot when unsafe practices are observed. Report systemic issues or ongoing trends to leadership.
  • Identify and communicate safety hazards: promptly identify and communicate hazards so they are addressed. Escalate high-risk gaps or persistent trends to your leader.
  • Support incident investigations: assist with safety incident investigations when requested by the incident owner.
  • Support contractor management: ensure contractors follow contractor management requirements.

Office work (20%):

  • Support hazard identification for scopes of work: help identify potential hazards in planned work activities.
  • Support contractor regulatory compliance: guide contractors on meeting WorkSafeBC and other applicable safety regulations and standards.
  • Support development of contractor EH&S plans: help develop comprehensive health and safety plans for contractors.
  • Participate in and coach on contractor health and safety plans: collaborate on detailed plans, including exposure control and ventilation.

Qualifications

  • 10 years of proven safety experience in high-risk work settings.
  • Terminal experience strongly preferred. Marine experience is also an asset.
  • Experience supporting projects or construction work in an operating environment.
  • Strong understanding of safety regulatory requirements, specifically WorkSafeBC and the BC Occupational Health and Safety Regulation.
  • Experience supporting high-risk work such as confined space entry, excavation, working at heights, and control of hazardous energy.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • An effective listener who seeks to understand the safety support needs of operations and clearly communicates company standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience promoting a culture that encourages reporting, learning, and continuous improvement.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Able to interact effectively with all levels of leadership.
  • Understanding of Human and Organizational Performance principles to support safety culture.

Education and Certifications

  • Diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), or demonstrated H&S competency supported by relevant experience.
  • A recognized safety certification (e.g., CRSP, CRST, CSO).
