Note: The primary pay rate is based on T4 classification; however, we will also consider applications from candidates interested in an INC classification, where applicable.
Description
The SCADA Transmission Engineer to join our clients team and play a key role in delivering complex, multi-discipline capital projects. In this role, your primary focus will be delivering capital work involving the integration of remote monitoring and control equipment for the power system, providing design, development, and testing of equipment used in substations, generating stations, and the distribution system.
The P&C Engineering SCADA Design Team provides essential engineering expertise and support to high-voltage transmission substations, generating stations, and distribution facilities across the province. The team also delivers project management, design, maintenance, and emergency response services at our client and selected external clients.
Responsibilities
- System Design & Integration: Focus on the design, configuration, testing, and troubleshooting of SCADA systems in electrical utility substations with operating voltages from 12kV to 500kV. Work with GE RTU products (GE D400, D20, D200, D25, IBOX), Ethernet networks, DNP3 protocol, Modbus Plus® protocol, protocol test equipment, and software.
- Engineering Deliverables: Prepare project documentation and deliverables in accordance with project and Engineering Design Practices (evaluation reports, specifications, proposals, estimates, design bases, calculations, hazard logs, test plans). Prepare design work packages including scope, duration, and level of effort estimates.
- Professional of Record (PoR): Prepare signed and sealed engineering deliverables as a PoR in accordance with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) and Design Practices. Provide field technical assistance, construction support, and undertake field reviews as required by EGBC.
- Configuration & Testing: Prepare detailed SCADA design packages, device point assignments, and configurations. Configure and program RTUs, gateway devices, user interfaces, network switches/routers, and other IEDs related to SCADA systems. Specify and procure materials, panel assemblies, and related equipment.
- Validation & Support: Test and validate device configurations in a lab environment. Prepare and execute pre-commissioning test plans. Provide technical guidance and support throughout cross-discipline integration, factory testing, installation, and commissioning, as well as training for end-users and peers.
- Project & Team Leadership: Undertake a variety of engineering assignments, taking responsibility for projects or project segments. Provide instructions, advice, and technical leadership, review work to ensure compliance with standards and procedures, and interact with external service providers and contractors.
- Problem Solving & Relationships: Apply initiative, judgment, and theoretical/practical knowledge to resolve complex problems, consulting senior engineers or supervisors for unusual issues. Maintain strong, constructive relationships with internal/external clients, contractors, and suppliers.
Qualifications
- 4 years of progressive engineering experience in a relevant field, specifically demonstrating hands-on involvement with electrical utility substations, power systems, or industrial automation.
- High-Voltage SCADA & Substation Experience: Demonstrated experience with the design, configuration, testing, and troubleshooting of SCADA systems in high-voltage environments (12kV to 500kV substations or generating stations).
- Hardware & Protocol Proficiency GE RTU & Utility Protocols: Practical, hands-on experience working with GE RTU products (such as the D400, D20, D200, D25, or IBOX), Ethernet networking, and standard utility communication protocols including DNP3 and Modbus Plus.
- Proven capability to independently prepare comprehensive engineering packages and deliverables - such as detailed SCADA designs, device point assignments, evaluation reports, design bases, hazard logs, and pre-commissioning test plans - aligned with utility standards.
- Direct experience testing and validating device configurations in a lab environment, executing pre-commissioning test plans, and providing technical support during factory testing, installation, and field reviews.
- Nice-to-Haves
- Automation and SCADA experience within an industrial or utility setting.
- Any NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) related experience or compliance knowledge.
- Previous electrical utility industry experience.
- Driver's License: Valid Class 5 Driver's License. (must have)
- Safety Certification: Basic First Aid certification. (must have)
- Education and Certifications
- University graduate in applied science or engineering
- P.Eng and will be required to Provide Proof of Permit to Practice, registered with EGBC when hired
Additional Information
- Every contractor must supply their own Windows 11 Laptop computer for the duration of the assignment.
- Every contractor must supply their own “Smart Phone”. This is needed to gain access to the Organizations network.
