Senior Business Analyst

Contract Length: 1 year
Location: Calgary Alberta

Raise is currently hiring a Senior Business Analyst on behalf of our client. They’re expanding their team to meet growing needs, making this a unique opportunity to work with an industry leader. Our client is responsible for the safe and reliable operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System.

Description

Our client is embarking upon a major restructuring of the Alberta Energy Market. The Restructured Energy Market (REM) program is an organization-wide, multi-year undertaking involving the implementation of new 3rd-party systems, deep integrations with existing and new infrastructure, and the deployment of a new Energy Settlement System (ESS) and Marketing Management System (MMS) into operations within an aggressive ~3-year timeline.

They are seeking a talented and experienced Senior Business Analyst with a background in the electrical utility sector to join our dynamic team. This role is responsible for understanding and documenting business requirements (including Soft Launch requirements), supporting solution configuration, delivery, operational readiness, and ensuring a seamless transition to the restructured energy market through Soft Launch, Go-Live, and post-implementation stabilization.

Responsibilities

Soft Launch Management: Lead the definition, validation, and traceability of Soft Launch requirements, including entry/exit criteria, business readiness measures, operating scenarios, and stakeholder acceptance needs.
Execution & Readiness Support: Support Soft Launch planning and execution by coordinating business activities, validating end-to-end processes, identifying readiness gaps, and supporting issue triage and resolution.
Go-Live & Stabilization Strategy: Contribute to comprehensive Go-Live planning - covering cutover activities, business readiness, stakeholder communications, contingency planning, and post-Go-Live support and stabilization.
Market Transition Coordination: Support the broader market transition by coordinating requirements and dependencies across business and technology teams, confirming operational impacts, and maintaining market operations continuity.
Stakeholder Collaboration & Analysis: Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements, build business cases for proposed initiatives, and utilize analytical tools/techniques to drive informed decision-making.
Cross-Organizational Delivery: Drive cross-organizational activities to implement new and complex business lines successfully from inception to deployment.

Qualifications

10+ years of professional experience in business analysis or a related role, featuring deep, specific experience within the electrical utility industry and familiarity with energy trading or market operations.
Strong proficiency in data analysis tools and techniques (such as SQL, advanced Excel, and data visualization software) to identify operational trends, insights, and patterns.
Comprehensive knowledge of electrical utility operations, grid management, and asset management, coupled with a proven track record of managing multiple cross-functional projects implementing complex business lines.
Demonstrated success taking large-scale projects from inception through to implementation and post-go-live stabilization, backed by a strong working knowledge of change management principles and methodologies to drive stakeholder buy-in.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the proven ability to bridge technical and non-technical stakeholders, translate complex concepts, and foster effective cross-functional teamwork.
High adaptability to respond effectively to evolving priorities, rigorous timelines, and complex project interdependencies within a fast-paced regulatory and market transformation environment.
Education and Certifications
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, such as: Business Administration, Commerce, or Management Information Systems (MIS): Provides the foundational background for process mapping, financial business cases, and enterprise requirements management. Engineering (Electrical/Mechanical), Computer Science, or Economics: Highly preferred for utility-sector roles given the technical complexities of power grids, market rules, energy trading systems, and software integrations.
Preferred (Bonus): A graduate degree (such as an MBA or a specialized Master’s in Energy Systems/Data Analytics) is considered a strong asset for senior-level leadership and strategic alignment.
Nice to have certifications CBAP, CCBA, PMP (Project Management Professional), Prosci ADKAR Certification, PMI-ACP or CSM (Certified ScrumMaster)
