The successful candidate will oversee and review EPC contractor engineering deliverables, ensure compliance with project requirements and applicable industry standards, and provide expert guidance throughout project development, design, construction, commissioning, and project closeout.
- This role is responsible for evaluating electrical system designs, overseeing interconnection activities, identifying technical risks, and ensuring the successful delivery of safe, reliable, and cost-effective renewable energy facilities.
- Lead the review of EPC contractor engineering and design packages (IFR and IFC) to ensure accuracy, completeness, constructability, and compliance with project requirements, codes, and industry standards.
- Provide technical oversight and coordinate design refinements with EPC contractors, consultants, utilities, and internal stakeholders.
- Review and assess HV substation, solar PV, wind, and BESS electrical designs, including:
- General arrangements
- Single-line diagrams
- Grounding systems
- Protection and control schemes
- Relay coordination studies
- Verify the proper integration of medium-voltage (MV) and high-voltage (HV) equipment, including main power transformers, inverters, switchgear, circuit breakers, and associated balance-of-plant systems.
- Ensure compliance with applicable standards and regulations, including IEEE, UL, CSA, NFPA, NEC, NESC, and utility interconnection requirements.
- Evaluate technical risks and recommend practical, cost-effective engineering solutions that support project objectives.
- Support grid interconnection activities and collaborate with EPC teams to ensure all technical submissions satisfy utility, regulatory, and reliability requirements.
- Coordinate with regulatory and compliance teams to ensure electrical designs meet local, provincial/state, and federal requirements.
- Oversee the preparation and review of detailed engineering and construction drawings, ensuring complete and efficient designs that support successful project execution.
- Ensure alignment with project procedures, engineering standards, environmental requirements, and health and safety regulations, while identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Participate in and lead design review meetings to ensure consistency in project scope, design intent, quality, and expected performance.
- Review vendor quotations, perform technical bid evaluations, and provide recommendations based on technical merit, risk, cost, and long-term reliability.
- Collaborate with Supply Chain and project teams to support the procurement of electrical equipment and materials.
- Provide technical support throughout all project phases, including development, detailed engineering, construction, commissioning, startup, and closeout.
- Respond to engineering-related RFIs, evaluate field modifications, and provide technical guidance during construction activities.
- Support commissioning, testing, and energization of HV substations, renewable generation facilities, and associated protection and control systems.
- Participate in and witness Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) and Site Acceptance Tests (SATs) for major electrical equipment as required.
- Oversee the development and implementation of technical solutions, ensuring effective coordination among internal teams, contractors, consultants, and external stakeholders.
- Contribute to the successful operation and delivery of assigned projects, recognizing their significant financial and operational impact on the organization.
- Provide mentorship, technical guidance, and informal leadership to peers and project team members.
Required
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with APEGA or an equivalent regulatory body, or eligibility for registration.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in electrical engineering design, construction, and commissioning activities.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience supporting renewable energy projects, including solar, wind, BESS, HV substations, and utility interconnections.
- Extensive knowledge of HV substations (34.5 kV to 345 kV), renewable energy plant electrical systems, power system analysis, and protection and control schemes.
- Strong understanding of utility interconnection processes and the integration of utility-scale renewable generation into transmission and distribution networks.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proven ability to collaborate, facilitate discussions, negotiate solutions, and influence decisions across multiple stakeholders without direct authority.
- Valid driver's license and ability to satisfy company motor vehicle requirements.
- Experience with SCADA systems, RTUs, and communication protocols such as DNP3, Modbus, and IEC 61850.
- Knowledge of specialized power system studies, including:
- Cable heating analyses
- AC and DC cable loss studies
- Transient Recovery Voltage (TRV)
- Insulation coordination
- Grounding system studies
- Load flow analysis
- Short-circuit analysis
- Transformer energization studies
- Experience using industry-standard power system modeling and analysis software, including PSS®E, ETAP, PSCAD, and SKM.
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 10%, including occasional overnight travel to project sites, fabrication facilities, and vendor locations.
- Ability to work safely in construction and operational environments and utilize required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Provides technical leadership and engineering oversight for complex renewable energy projects with significant operational and financial impact.
- Oversees the development, review, and implementation of engineering solutions that support project execution and long-term asset performance.
- Coordinates with internal departments, EPC contractors, consultants, utilities, regulators, and equipment suppliers to achieve project objectives.
- Serves as a senior technical resource and provides informal leadership, mentorship, and guidance to engineering peers and project teams.
- Contributes directly to project quality, schedule performance, risk management, regulatory compliance, and overall project success.
