PCB & Embedded Systems Engineer
Ranchflow AI | IdeaHUB | In person | Full-time contract
Pay: $35–$40/hour
About Ranchflow AI
Ranchflow AI develops virtual fencing collars and livestock management technology. We’re looking for a PCB & Embedded Systems Engineer to design and improve the electronics and firmware that power our collars and supporting equipment, with a focus on reliability, energy efficiency, and operation in demanding farm environments.
What you’ll do
- Develop schematics and PCB layouts for virtual fencing collars and supporting equipment.
- Integrate microcontrollers, positioning modules, sensors, wireless radios, and collar output circuitry.
- Design battery-powered systems, including charging, protection, voltage regulation, and power monitoring.
- Develop and debug embedded firmware for positioning, virtual boundary detection, sensors, communications, and collar operation.
- Implement fault detection and defined device behaviour during low-battery, positioning, or connectivity failures.
- Bring up prototype boards and troubleshoot hardware and firmware issues.
- Measure and optimize power consumption, battery life, and system reliability.
- Select components and maintain bills of materials, design documentation, and manufacturing files.
- Work with mechanical and field testing teams to address enclosure, environmental, and field performance requirements.
- Support PCB fabrication, assembly, testing, and design revisions.
What you’ll bring
- A degree in electrical, electronics, or computer engineering, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Experience designing schematics and PCB layouts using tools such as Altium, KiCad, or equivalent.
- A solid understanding of analog and digital circuits, microcontrollers, and power electronics.
- Embedded programming experience in C or C++.
- Familiarity with interfaces such as I²C, SPI, UART, and ADCs.
- Hands-on experience with board bring-up and electronic test equipment.
- An organized approach to documentation, version control, and debugging.
Nice to have
- Experience with ESP32-based systems, GPS/GNSS modules, LoRa radios, or other IoT platforms.
- Experience with lithium-ion batteries, solar charging, and low-power firmware.
- Familiarity with RF layout, antenna integration, and EMC considerations.
- Experience with watchdogs, firmware updates, and embedded fault handling.
- Experience preparing electronics for manufacturing and production testing.
