We are seeking a highly analytical and operationally driven Controller to lead our finance function through a period of plant optimization and footprint expansion. Overseeing a team of 10+ accounting and plant finance professionals, you will hold end-to-end accountability for cost accounting, inventory valuation, financial reporting, and internal controls across multiple manufacturing and distribution facilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Standard Costing & Variance Analysis: Direct the maintenance of standard cost systems, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and routing files; conduct weekly/monthly analysis of direct labor, material usage, and overhead absorption variances.
- Inventory Control & Valuations: Oversee physical inventory counts and cycle count programs across all facilities; manage valuation of Raw Materials, Work-in-Progress (WIP), and Finished Goods under IFRS (IAS 2) / ASPE, including reserves for excess and obsolete (E&O) inventory.
- Plant Profitability & Margins: Partner with plant operations to analyze product-line profitability, scrap rates, machine utilization, and continuous improvement initiatives (Lean / Six Sigma financial tracking).
- Consolidated Financial Statements: Lead month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, producing consolidated financial statements, management commentary, and operational reporting packages.
- CapEx & Asset Management: Oversee fixed asset accounting, depreciation schedules, and post-implementation ROI reviews for major capital expenditures, plant automation upgrades, and equipment leases.
- Audit & Tax Adherence: Manage relations with external auditors and ensure compliance with transfer pricing policies, cross-border customs/tariffs, SR&ED claims, and credit facility covenants.
- Internal Controls: Establish and enforce robust operational and financial internal controls surrounding procurement, inventory management, and shipping/receiving workflows.
- Team Leadership: Manage, mentor, and develop a team of 10+ professionals covering plant accounting, GL, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll.
- ERP & Process Optimization: Leverage and optimize mid-to-tier 1 manufacturing ERP modules to streamline shop-floor integration, inventory tracking, and financial consolidation.
Qualifications & Experience
- Professional Designation: Active CPA (CA, CMA, CGA) designation is mandatory.
- Experience: 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role (Controller or Plant Controller) within a medium-to-large manufacturing, assembly, or industrial production enterprise.
- Technical Mastery: Deep expertise in standard costing methodologies, inventory accounting, fixed assets, multi-plant cost allocations, and Canadian/US tax and cross-border trade considerations under IFRS or ASPE.
- Systems Expertise: Hands-on experience with manufacturing ERP systems (e.g., SAP S/4HANA, Microsoft Dynamics 365, QAD, Infor, or NetSuite) and EPM tools. Advanced Excel modeling skills (pivots, macros, complex financial modeling) are required.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
