Original job description

About Us

RATES.CA GROUP LTD. is one of Canada’s fastest-growing technology companies. We help Canadians make informed financial decisions through product comparisons, original content, and user-friendly financial tools. We partner with leading insurers, banks, credit unions, and brokers to give consumers more choice and access to better financial products.

The Opportunity

Our established PHP applications run in containers on AWS, and we’re building our next generation of products on Next.js, Cloudflare, AWS serverless (API Gateway, Lambda, DynamoDB, Bedrock). You’ll work across both worlds: keeping the current systems healthy while helping shape the new architecture and migrate functionality over.

You’ll work closely with product, marketing, and other cross-functional teams.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, build, and maintain features across our PHP applications and our new Next.js / serverless stack
  • Contribute to the migration of remaining legacy functionality into modern services
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, design, and ship new features
  • Build and consume RESTful APIs
  • Improve performance, reliability, responsiveness, and security
  • Maintain code quality through reviews, testing, and automation
  • Use Datadog to monitor and troubleshoot production systems

What You Bring (Required)

  • 4+ years of professional PHP experience, including at least one framework (Laravel, Symfony, or similar) and solid understanding of MVC patterns
  • 2+ years working with AWS services
  • Hands-on experience with Docker; basic familiarity with container orchestration (Kubernetes or ECS)
  • Experience with Node.js and a modern JavaScript/TypeScript framework (Next.js, React, Vue, or similar)
  • Strong HTML5 and CSS3 skills
  • Experience with both SQL and NoSQL databases
  • Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Clear communicator who can work independently and collaborate well
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

Nice to Have

  • Experience with AWS serverless architecture (Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB)
  • Experience with Cloudflare (Workers, Pages, CDN)
  • Experience with Datadog or similar observability tools
  • Experience migrating or refactoring legacy applications
  • Background in fintech, insurance, or comparison/lead-generation platforms

Why Join Us

  • Meaningful work on a platform that helps Canadians make better financial decisions
  • A chance to work on a real modernization effort, with greenfield development alongside legacy systems
  • Respectful and collaborative culture, partial work-from-home (approx. 50%)

This is a 1 year contract with opportunity for permanent.
