Position: Protection and Control Designer (Mid- Level)

Job Description And Summary
RCMT Energy Services is seeking an experienced Protection and Control Designer with a strong background in high voltage substations to join its team in Mississauga, ON, Canada.
The successful candidate will prepare protection and control design packages for high voltage substation projects, working independently with minimal guidance under the direction of the Lead Engineer.
Projects may include travel to client sites as needed to perform job functions at existing facilities, such as, but not limited to, field verification and collecting the data needed to prepare the design.
Responsibilities
- Prepare protection and control design deliverables for high voltage substations, including single-line and three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring and interconnection diagrams, and protection and control logic diagrams.
- Develop relay and control panel layouts, front and rear panel elevations, panel wiring diagrams, and cable and conduit schedules.
- Prepare bills of material and assist with the selection of protection relays, IEDs, RTUs, meters, and auxiliary devices (GE UR, SEL, ABB, Siemens, etc.).
- Support engineers with relay setting and configuration files, protection coordination, and design calculations (e.g., battery and charger sizing, DC load, and AC station service).
- Prepare SCADA, communications, and network design documentation, including points lists, RTU/gateway I/O, communication architecture, and fibre/network diagrams.
- Perform field verification at existing facilities, mark up drawings, and incorporate construction and commissioning red-lines into as-built drawings.
- Coordinate with engineers, designers, drafters, and project stakeholders to ensure deliverables meet project scope, schedule, client standards, and applicable codes.
- Perform self-checks and peer checks of design packages to ensure quality and consistency.
- Support construction and commissioning activities, including responding to RFIs and field design changes as required.
Requirements
- Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology or a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A P.Eng. license is not required. C.E.T. certification (OACETT) or EIT status is considered an asset.
- 3–7 years of experience in protection and control design for high voltage substations (utility, transmission, distribution, or industrial).
- Solid working knowledge of high voltage substation protection and control systems, including line, transformer, bus, breaker failure, and feeder protection schemes, instrument transformers (CTs/VTs), AC/DC systems, and interlocking and control schemes.
- Ability to read and interpret protection and control schematics, relay logic, and vendor drawings.
- Familiarity with IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, SCADA, and RTU communications.
- Proficient in AutoCAD and/or MicroStation and related products; experience with AutoCAD Electrical is an asset.
- Familiarity with applicable codes and standards (CSA, IEEE, IEC, Ontario Electrical Safety Code) and utility design standards is an asset.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office.
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and apply sound judgment, initiative, and decision making.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills to interact with clients, equipment vendors, and construction contractors.
- Ability to be flexible and work with competing priorities.
- Willingness to travel to client sites as required.
- Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or hold a valid work permit for work in Canada.
