PURPOSE OF POSITION:
As a senior member of the Application Delivery team, you will have a background working with a wide range of stakeholders to provide and implement solutions to satisfy business needs This position works across Guidewire InsuranceSuite, integrations, APIs, Java and web applications, Azure cloud services, and DevOps-enabled delivery practices. Working within established architecture and standards, the Software Developer III takes ownership of complex development assignments, makes sound application-level technical decisions with minimal oversight, contributes to coding and development standards, and assists in mentoring less-experienced developers.
KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS:Enterprise Application Development:
- Collaborate with Business Analysts and other stakeholders to investigate business and technical problems, clarify requirements, and identify appropriate application solutions.
- Evaluate implementation options, risks, and dependencies, and make sound application-level technical decisions within established enterprise, solution, integration, security, and cloud architecture guidelines.
- Take ownership of complex development assignments from technical analysis and detailed solution design through implementation, testing, deployment, and production stabilization, with minimal oversight.
- Design, configure, develop, and support enterprise insurance applications, including user interfaces, business rules, workflows, and other platform capabilities, with Guidewire InsuranceSuite currently serving as a core application platform.
- Develop and maintain integrations across Guidewire and other enterprise solutions using APIs and web services, file-based methods, messaging, and database technologies.
- Collaborate with internal developers and external delivery partners, including offshore resources, to clarify technical requirements, review solutions and code, share knowledge, and help ensure the quality and maintainability of delivered solutions.
Application Support and Technical Analysis:
- Provide technical application support and take ownership of complex production issues from investigation and root-cause analysis through resolution and stabilization.
- Apply knowledge of property and casualty insurance processes to analyze application issues, assess the technical impact of proposed changes, and support business initiatives, process improvements, and complex application implementations and enhancements.
- Collaborate with Business Analysts, Solution Architects, Integration Architects, developers, and external delivery partners to investigate issues, evaluate technical options, coordinate resolution activities, and communicate technical findings clearly.
- Mentor less-experienced developers through technical guidance, knowledge sharing, and problem-solving support, and contribute to effective collaboration across IT functional areas.
Quality Engineering and Continuous Improvement:
- Apply test-driven development, automated unit testing, SOLID principles, and appropriate object-oriented and functional programming techniques to produce reliable, modular, and maintainable solutions.
- Perform constructive code reviews to identify defects and risks, promote adherence to coding standards, and improve the quality and maintainability of delivered solutions.
- Use AI-assisted development tools responsibly, applying human-in-the-loop practices to review, validate, test, secure, and take accountability for AI-assisted outputs.
- Apply shift-left DevOps practices by considering testing, security, deployment, supportability, and operational requirements throughout the development lifecycle, and adopt cloud-first approaches within established architecture guidelines.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of development standards, tools, processes, documentation, and technical practices, applying Lean principles where appropriate and protecting corporate information and assets.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
Education & Certifications:
- College or University degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Guidewire certification is strongly preferred. Candidates with strong software engineering capabilities who are not currently certified may be considered, with the expectation of obtaining appropriate Guidewire certification shortly following employment.
- Lean certification and Property & Casualty insurance industry knowledge are considered assets.
Skills & Experience
- 7+ years of software development experience, including application design, development, systems analysis, integrations, application support, and participation throughout the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).
- Experience developing, integrating, and supporting enterprise applications in complex business environments; experience with Guidewire InsuranceSuite is strongly preferred.
- Strong experience developing enterprise applications using object-oriented principles, software design patterns, APIs/web services, messaging technologies, databases, cloud-based solutions, CI/CD practices, and automated testing. Experience with technologies such as Java, Gosu, Spring Boot, JavaScript frameworks, SQL, Git, Jenkins, Docker, IntelliJ IDEA, Visual Studio Code, Postman, and related software delivery tools is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to independently investigate complex technical problems, evaluate solution options, assess risks and dependencies, and implement effective, maintainable solutions with minimal oversight. Strong understanding of object-oriented programming, SOLID principles, functional programming concepts, software quality practices, and database design concepts.
- Experience performing code reviews and contributing to coding standards, development practices, documentation, continuous improvement initiatives, and the responsible use of AI-assisted development tools with appropriate validation, testing, security, and human oversight practices.
- Strong communication, collaboration, prioritization, accountability, adaptability, and attention to detail, with the ability to communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
