Original job description

Who we are:

Reliable Controls is dedicated to reducing the carbon footprint of buildings around the world. Our team specializes in the design, development, and assembly of building automation controls and software programs. We're working hard to create solutions for building operators to enable the vision of Net-Zero Emissions by 2050.

We align ourselves with the right people and empower them in the right ways. An established company based in Victoria, BC and with a new manufacturing facility in Edmonton, we nurture a strong culture of communication, trust, and collaboration. Embracing a work–life balance, promoting continuous learning, and celebrating our achievements are a few of the ways we show our enduring commitment to employees.

Your mission:

The SMT Machine Operator will be responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining SMT equipment to ensure the efficient production of high-quality electronic assemblies. The ideal candidate will have experience with surface mount technology machines and a strong understanding of the manufacturing process. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to quality are essential for this role.

This is a full-time, on-site, overnight shift with hours from 11:00pm – 7:30am.

In this role you will:

SMT Machine Operation: Set up and operate SMT machines (e.g., pick-and-place machines, solder paste printers, reflow ovens) according to job specifications.
Component Placement: Ensure accurate placement of electronic components on PCBs, following design and placement guidelines.
Machine Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of SMT machines to ensure they are in optimal working condition.
Process Monitoring: Monitor machine performance during production runs, ensuring that components are placed correctly, and defects are minimized.
Quality Control: Inspect PCBs for defects such as misplacements, soldering issues, or component damage, and take corrective actions as necessary.
Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve machine malfunctions, issues with components, or production errors in a timely manner.
Material Handling: Ensure that all materials, including PCB boards and components, are correctly loaded into machines and ready for production.
Documentation: Complete necessary production paperwork, such as machine logs, production reports, and quality checks to be compliant with ISO9001.
Collaboration: Work closely with production supervisors, quality control teams, and other machine operators to ensure efficient workflow and timely production.
Safety Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized workspace to ensure safe and efficient operations.

This role might be right for you if you have:

High school diploma or equivalent (technical certification preferred).
Minimum of 2 years of experience operating SMT machines in an electronic manufacturing environment.
Familiarity with SMT equipment (e.g., pick-and-place machines, solder paste printers, reflow ovens).
Strong understanding of electronic components, assembly processes, and SMT technology.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and work instructions.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot machine issues.
Good communication skills and ability to work well in a team.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet production targets.
Knowledge of safety practices and protocols in a manufacturing environment.

You’ll be successful in this position if you:

Are an enthusiastic, innovative individual who cares about sustainability
Strong documentation and organizational skills for tracking production runs.
Team player with effective communication skills.
Problem-solving ability to address equipment or process issues.
Flexibility to perform other manufacturing tasks or duties as assigned
Are patient and diligent; quality may take longer, but you know it's worth it

What we offer:

Competitive Compensation & Rewards: Your hard work and dedication don’t go unnoticed. We offer:

A competitive extended health and dental plan for you and your family

A yearly RRSP contribution on the company’s behalf, plus employee contribution matching to support your financial growth

An annual profit sharing bonus that recognizes your contributions to our growth

A salary that is based on market data and reviewed annually, with merit increases and cost-of-living adjustments

Learning, Mentorship & Growth: We offer $2,000 per year reimbursement for learning and development related to your role, mentorship from experienced team members, and development pathways to help you grow.

Recognition & Celebration: We celebrate excellence with awards and recognition for both long service and outstanding achievements. At Reliable Controls, success is a team effort, and we make sure it’s shared and celebrated.

Purpose-Driven Innovation: At Reliable Controls, innovation means creating sustainable, meaningful solutions that make buildings smarter and the world greener. Every project you work on contributes to a legacy of environmental responsibility and global impact.

Reliable Controls is proud to be an equal opportunity employer, and we’re committed to fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in every aspect of our organization.

When applying for a role, we recognize that each person’s career path is unique. Even if your experience doesn’t perfectly match every listed qualification, we encourage you to apply. We value potential, passion, and alignment with our values as much as direct experience.

We’re also dedicated to ensuring that every candidate enjoys a comfortable, respectful, and accessible interview experience. If you require any accommodations during the hiring process, please let us know.
