About Remote Robotic Systems
Help build advanced systems operating at the intersection of aerospace, robotics, and defence technology.
Remote Robotic Systems (RRS) is a Canadian robotics and defence-tech company helping organizations deploy enterprise-grade drones, uncrewed aircraft, robotic platforms, sensors, payloads, and remote operations technologies for mission-critical applications. Our solutions support customers across defence, public safety, security, industrial, infrastructure, energy, and government sectors.
Through our AirMetal team, we develop advanced aerospace, communications, and autonomous systems designed for demanding real-world environments.
We're a small, fast-moving engineering team that values ownership, technical depth, practical problem solving, and the ability to turn ambitious ideas into working systems. Team members have the opportunity to contribute directly to product decisions and see their work move quickly from concept to deployment.
The Role
AirMetal is looking for an experienced Android and robotics software developer to lead the development of TacMesh and its Android ground control application.
TacMesh is our tactical radio and edge-compute payload for uncrewed systems. It runs ROS 2 Humble on NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX hardware and connects robots and sensors to tactical mesh radio networks. Its Android application, including an ATAK plugin, allows operators to control vehicles and view live video and sensor data in the field.
You will take ownership of both the payload software and Android application for the term of the contract. Working directly with the Lead Software Engineer and product team, you will help shape technical decisions and deliver a reliable, field-ready system.
This role is a strong fit for an experienced developer who enjoys working across software, embedded hardware, networking, and robotic systems and wants to see their work move quickly into real-world use.
What You Will Work On
TacMesh Payload Development
- Lead development of the TacMesh payload software using ROS 2, Docker, and NVIDIA Jetson.
- Integrate new sensors and robotic platforms into the payload.
- Build, configure, and test payload units before customer delivery.
Android Application Development
- Lead development of the Android ground control application, from architecture through release.
- Develop and maintain the ATAK plugin used to control vehicles and view live video and sensor data.
- Extend the existing application architecture using Kotlin and modern Android development practices.
Reliability, Testing & Documentation
- Design for reliability in field conditions through automated testing and system diagnostics.
- Troubleshoot software, networking, hardware, and integration issues across the system.
- Maintain clear technical and operational documentation for each component.
Core Requirements
- A degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- At least four years of professional software development experience.
- Experience shipping production Android applications from development through release.
- Strong Kotlin skills, including coroutines, Flows, and Jetpack Compose.
- Experience with MVVM, unidirectional data flow, and modern software architecture.
- Ability to work within and extend an established codebase.
- Experience programming in Python or C++ on Linux.
- Working knowledge of networking fundamentals.
- Comfort with hands-on hardware work, including assembly, cabling, and bench testing.
- Ability to turn requirements into a technical approach, explain trade-offs, and raise concerns or propose alternatives when appropriate.
- Strong written technical documentation and communication skills.
Nice to Have
- ROS 2 development.
- NVIDIA Jetson, Docker, or embedded Linux.
- ATAK plugin development.
- MAVLink.
- Low-latency video streaming, including RTSP or GStreamer.
- Tactical mesh or MANET radio networks.
- Robotic platform and field-sensor integration.
- Previous work in a defence-industry environment.
What You Will Gain
- Ownership of a product that is actively used by customers, spanning payload software and the operator application.
- Hands-on experience with robots, drone systems, tactical radios, and edge-compute hardware.
- The opportunity to influence technical decisions while working directly with the Lead Software Engineer and product team.
- Experience delivering technology for demanding, real-world operating environments.
- Potential opportunity to move into a full-time role following the contract, based on business needs and performance.
