Original job description

About Remote Robotic Systems

Help build advanced systems operating at the intersection of aerospace, robotics, and defence technology.

Remote Robotic Systems (RRS) is a Canadian robotics and defence-tech company helping organizations deploy enterprise-grade drones, uncrewed aircraft, robotic platforms, sensors, payloads, and remote operations technologies for mission-critical applications. Our solutions support customers across defence, public safety, security, industrial, infrastructure, energy, and government sectors.

Through our AirMetal team, we develop advanced aerospace, communications, and autonomous systems designed for demanding real-world environments.

We're a small, fast-moving engineering team that values ownership, technical depth, practical problem solving, and the ability to turn ambitious ideas into working systems. Team members have the opportunity to contribute directly to product decisions and see their work move quickly from concept to deployment.

The Role

AirMetal is looking for a Full Stack Developer to help build a web platform that provides access to a tactical drone simulator and its training material. The first release is planned for September 2026, with a substantial roadmap beyond the initial launch.

You will work directly alongside our technical lead and contribute to decisions about the architecture, data model, and security approach. We expect you to bring forward your own proposals, question assumptions, and speak up when you see a better solution. You will then help build the agreed approach across the frontend, backend, database, and deployment environment.

This role is a strong fit for a student or independent developer who wants to write a meaningful amount of code on a real production system, contribute to how the system is designed, and see their work reach users quickly.

What You Will Work On

Full-Stack Development

Build polished, responsive, accessible frontend pages based on designs supplied by our marketing team.
Build the backend supporting those pages, including forms, validation, business logic, file handling, and administrative screens used by internal staff.
Design the database schema with our technical lead, then implement the schema and supporting queries.
Write tests and help run the release process.

Infrastructure & Security

Help set up and maintain the servers that host the platform. We install and operate our own stack on Linux virtual machines.
Help design and implement security controls, including input validation, access control, rate limiting, and audit logging.
Contribute to deployment, monitoring, backup, and change practices appropriate for a live system.

User Support & Documentation

Support platform users in person, on calls, and in writing.
Write clear technical and operational documentation as you build.
Communicate technical trade-offs and implementation decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Core Requirements

Currently enrolled in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, information technology, or a related program, or working as an independent developer with equivalent demonstrated experience.
Experience building a complete web application from frontend to backend, with comfort working across more than one layer of the stack.
Experience with at least one web application framework.
Working knowledge of SQL and relational database fundamentals.
Working knowledge of HTML and CSS, with enough JavaScript to contribute productively within an existing codebase.
Experience using Git and working from the Linux command line.
A careful approach to live systems, including testing changes, maintaining backups, and documenting work.
Ability to turn a requirement into a design, explain technical trade-offs, and ask effective questions when requirements are unclear.
A curious, methodical, and persistent approach to debugging.
Comfort supporting and communicating with people who are not technical.

Nice to Have

Backend experience with Node.js and TypeScript, Fastify or Express, ASP.NET Core, Django, Rails, or Go.
Experience with PostgreSQL, an ORM such as Prisma or Entity Framework, and writing correct database transactions.
Experience with server-rendered templates, modern CSS, and web accessibility standards such as WCAG.
Experience with Docker, Nginx or Caddy, TLS certificates, or Linux server administration.
Experience with S3-compatible object storage, DNS, SPF, DKIM, or DMARC.
Experience supporting a live system with real users.
Previous work with a government or defence customer.

What You Will Gain

Production experience on a live platform with real users, from initial development through launch.
Exposure across the full stack, including user interface, application logic, database, and infrastructure.
Hands-on infrastructure experience that is not available in many web-development roles.
Direct exposure to a defence customer and the operating requirements of the industry.
The opportunity to contribute ideas and influence technical decisions while working directly with the technical lead.

Employment Details

Type: Co-op or fixed-term contract. This posting is for an existing, open vacancy.

Term: To be confirmed based on the selected engagement structure and candidate availability.

Location: Kanata, ON

Compensation: $25.00-$35.00 CAD per hour, based on experience and fit for the role.

Security clearance: The successful candidate may be required to obtain and maintain a security clearance appropriate to the work.

Use of AI in hiring: We may use AI tools to help with parts of our hiring process, such as reviewing applications, screening resumes, and evaluating candidate responses. These tools support our team, but people make all hiring decisions. AI is used to assist, not replace, human judgment.

Application Process

If you are excited about full-stack development, production systems, and building technology that supports advanced robotics and defence applications, we would love to hear from you.

Please submit your resume and, if available, a link to a project, portfolio, GitHub profile, or brief description of a complete web application you have built. Please identify the parts of the application you personally designed or implemented.

Remote Robotic Systems is an equal opportunity employer. If you require accommodation during the recruitment process, please let us know.
