Role: Technical Field Lead
Our Vision: RigUp is where the best workers power the world’s most successful projects. We are united by a common mission: to deliver services and technology that fundamentally change how skilled workers and the businesses they serve get hard work done.
Job Description:
The role involves delivering a risk assessment, training and education program for legacy oil and gas wells on County-owned land. This position will be the technical face of the project, leading site surveys, working with County staff, and bringing local, hands-on well knowledge. An engineering team provides the engineering review and sign-off behind this role.
The project covers 8 documented wells on 5 County properties, a search for undocumented wells across the County's portfolio, a well-by-well risk register, an emergency SOP, staff training and public workshops. The County holds more than 5,000 of Ontario's roughly 27,000 recorded wells, so local field knowledge is central to the work.
Calibrated gas detectors are supplied; the position requires a vehicle, phone and personal PPE.
Responsibilities:
- Act as the on-the-ground technical lead with County staff, alongside the Project Manager
- Attend the kickoff, site meetings and progress meetings in Wyoming, Ontario, and present field findings to County staff
- Interview County roads, facilities, museum and site staff about known wells, odours, leaks and past incidents
- Research well files at the Oil, Gas and Salt Resources Library and in Ministry of Natural Resources (Petroleum Operations Section) records
- Help reconcile the County's well registry with historic air photos, fire insurance plans, GIS and asset records, and flag likely undocumented wells
- Supply field and local knowledge for the risk register: well type, plugging history, construction, access and nearby receptors
- Plan and lead site visits to documented wells and candidate locations once the County authorizes them
- Confirm location (GPS with stated accuracy) and access; record wellhead, cap and casing condition, settlement, venting, staining, odour and vegetation stress
- Screen for combustible gas, H2S and oxygen-deficient air with calibrated detectors; check nearby buildings, utilities, drains and catch basins
- Take photos and field notes to standards and recommend interim controls such as fencing, signage or access limits
- Do no excavation, entry or alteration of any well (work regulated under the Oil, Gas and Salt Resources Act is out of scope)
- Draft the field sections of each Well Action Sheet: access route, photos, observed hazards and recommended next steps
- Help prepare the scan of qualified Ontario plugging, well-control and environmental contractors
- Review the emergency SOP and field guide for practical accuracy
- Co-present the well-specific content at two 3-hour staff training sessions and two 2-hour public workshops
- Provide site photos and plain-language explanations for training and public materials
- Follow the project safe work plan and Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act duties on every visit, working with the HSE lead
- Report any condition suggesting an immediate hazard to the Project Manager and County right away, and stop work if needed
Skills and Qualifications:
Required:
- 5 or more years of field experience with oil, gas, brine or salt wells in Ontario, such as well-site supervision, inspection, plugging and abandonment, workovers, or abandoned-well surveys
- Working knowledge of the Oil, Gas and Salt Resources Act, its regulations and provincial operating standards, and of how MNR's Petroleum Operations Section works
- Hands-on experience with portable gas detection (4-gas and H2S) and field documentation
- At least 2 relevant projects you can describe and give references for (municipal, MNR or Abandoned Works Program projects count most)
- Current safety training: H2S Alive (or equivalent), WHMIS, and Standard First Aid/CPR
- A valid Ontario G licence, a reliable vehicle and personal PPE
- Based in southwestern Ontario, within a reasonable drive of Wyoming and the Petrolia and Oil Springs area
- WSIB coverage or a WSIB exemption letter, renewable every 60 days
- Clear, confident communication with municipal staff and the public
Preferred:
- Professional designation or technologist status: P.Geo, P.Eng, C.E.T. or C.Tech.
- Experience in the Lambton fields (Oil Springs, Petrolia, Enniskillen) or other southwestern Ontario pools
- Research experience at the Oil, Gas and Salt Resources Library
- Familiarity with the 2025 changes to the Oil, Gas and Salt Resources Act under the Resource Management and Safety Act, 2025
- Basic GIS or GPS mapping skills (QGIS, ArcGIS or sub-metre GPS)
- Experience presenting at training sessions or public meetings
- Contacts with Ontario plugging and well-service contractors
Role Details:
Location: Ontario
Schedule: Part-time
Pay: CA$80.00/Hr - Mileage and approved expenses reimbursed
December 8, 2026 to December 7, 2027
January to February (records research), May to June (site surveys), September to October (training and workshops)
