Role: Workday Payroll, Time, and Absence Tracking Functional Lead

Job Description:
This position seeks a seasoned Workday Payroll, Time & Absence Functional Lead to support a multi-year ERP harmonization initiative within the energy sector. This project aims to streamline financial systems across a mid-sized organization of approximately 3,000 employees. The contractor will play a key role in aligning Workday Payroll, Time and Absence functions with the new financial ERP platform, ensuring robust and optimized business processes.
This individual will serve as the primary functional subject matter expert for Payroll, Time Tracking, and Absence throughout the project lifecycle, partnering closely with HRIS, Payroll, business SMEs, Digital, integration teams, and implementation partners to support a successful deployment and transition to operations.
Responsibilities:
Functional Leadership • Lead Workday Payroll, Time Tracking and Absence workstream as part of the ERP harmonization program
- Act as the primary functional advisor on Workday Payroll, Time Tracking, and Absence best practices
- Drive design decisions, identify risks, and recommend scalable solutions aligned with the organization's existing Workday configuration
- Facilitate workshops and requirements sessions with business stakeholders and subject matter experts
- Document functional requirements, design decisions, assumptions, dependencies, and open items
Solution Design & Configuration • Assess existing payroll, time, and absence configurations and determine opportunities for reuse
- Identify configuration gaps required to support the integration to Oracle Fusion
- Lead future-state process design and configuration recommendations
- Partner with HRIS and technical teams to ensure configuration aligns with business requirements and compliance needs
Testing Leadership • Assist with development of Payroll, Time Tracking, and Absence testing strategies and scenarios
- Lead system integration testing, payroll parallel testing, user acceptance testing, and payroll validation activities
- Coordinate defect triage and resolution efforts
- Ensure payroll, absence, and time-related scenarios are tested and signed off by appropriate business stakeholders
Integrations & Cross-Functional Coordination • Partner with integration teams to assess impacts to upstream and downstream systems
- Review payroll, absence, and time-related integrations and data flows
- Collaborate with HR, Payroll, Finance, Benefits, and Digital teams to align project activities and dependencies
- Provide functional input into reporting, security, and change management activities
Deployment & Hypercare • Support cutover planning and payroll readiness activities
- Provide functional support during hypercare and stabilization
- Complete knowledge transfer to internal HRIS, HR, and Payroll teams
Skills and Qualifications:
Required: • 8+ years of Workday functional experience with expertise in Payroll, Time Tracking, and Absence
- Deep functional knowledge of Workday Payroll, Time Tracking, and Absence, with the ability to advise on best practices, process optimization, and scalable solution design
- Experience supporting Workday workstreams within large-scale ERP, business transformation, or system harmonization initiatives
- Proven ability to lead requirements gathering, solution design, testing, deployment, and stabilization activities across complex, cross-functional programs
- Experience assessing the impact of upstream and downstream systems, integrations, and business processes within a broader enterprise landscape
- Demonstrated success partnering with HRIS, Payroll, business stakeholders, Digital teams, integration resources, and external implementation partners
- Strong understanding of payroll processing, time management, absence administration, and operational business processes
- Experience working in complex, multi-stakeholder environments with competing priorities and dependencies
- Strong communication, facilitation, decision-making, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence outcomes across technical and business teams
Preferred: • Experience implementing Workday Payroll for acquisitions, mergers, legal entity consolidations, or employee population migrations
- Experience migrating employees into an existing Workday tenant rather than completing a net-new deployment
- Knowledge of unionized workforce considerations, complex pay practices, and workforce compliance requirements
- Exposure to Canadian Payroll processes, legislation, and regulatory requirements
- Experience in the energy, utilities, manufacturing, or industrial sector
