Original job description

English section of this bilingual listing.

Join Rio Tinto Strathcona Works, a specialized processing facility that converts petroleum coke into a key ingredient used to produce aluminium, supporting operations across North America.
Your contribution will play a critical role in maximizing the productivity, reliability, and effectiveness of our operation.
This permanent, full-time role is based in Edmonton, AB and generally follows a 12-hour, 4-on/4-off rotating schedule. Please note that the rotation is a floating schedule and includes both day and night shifts.

We’re Finding Better Ways™ to provide materials the world needs, now and in the future. Our values – care, courage and curiosity – guide how we work and how we treat each other.

About the role

We are looking for a Process Operator to contribute to the success of a safe, reliable, and efficient coke calcining operation. In this role, you will monitor, control, and optimize the production process while ensuring the safe operation of equipment and maintaining product quality across the plant.

The work is performed on a 12-hour rotating shift roster that generally follows a 4-on/4-off pattern. As this is a continuous operation, the schedule is floating and includes a combination of day, night, weekend, and holiday shifts.

This is a great opportunity for a safety-focused and mechanically inclined individual to build on existing industrial, manufacturing, or equipment operating experience while developing a rewarding career in process operations. Through a structured training program, you will gain exposure to both yard and board operator responsibilities, expanding your technical skills and operational knowledge. The role includes a variety of physically demanding activities and requires a reasonable level of physical fitness.

Reporting to the Supervisor, you will be:

Actively contributing to a safety-first culture by identifying hazards, speaking up, and supporting safe work practices across the team
Responding to non-routine operating conditions and emergency situations, initiating emergency response procedures in accordance with established protocols.
Operating large wheel loaders, rail equipment, forklifts, skid steers, and other mobile equipment to support plant operations.
Loading and unloading inbound raw materials and outbound finished product rail cars while coordinating the safe and efficient movement of rail traffic on site.
Conducting routine process inspections, identifying abnormalities, monitoring equipment and process health, and taking appropriate action to maintain safe and stable operations.
Maintaining accurate operational records and logbooks, ensuring effective communication during shift handovers and day-to-day operations.
Supporting maintenance activities, including the servicing of mobile and stationary equipment, while maintaining high standards of housekeeping across work areas and equipment.
Working safely and effectively both independently and as part of a team, demonstrating respectful communication and collaboration with colleagues.

About you

We’re looking for someone whose experience aligns with the key requirements below. You do not need to meet every “helpful for success” item to apply, if you bring relevant experience and are excited by the opportunity, we encourage you to submit an application.

Required for Success:

A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team.
A high school diploma (or GED), a valid provincial driver's licence, and the ability to successfully complete required safety training and mobile equipment certifications.
Previous experience working in an industrial, manufacturing, construction, or other safety-sensitive environment.
Strong mechanical aptitude, equipment troubleshooting abilities, and basic math skills, including working with decimals and percentages.
The physical ability to perform manual tasks such as lifting up to 50 lb., using hand tools, shovelling, sweeping, and loading or unloading materials.
Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the flexibility to work a rotating schedule that includes day and night shifts.

Helpful for Success:

Journeyperson status in a mechanical trade
Experience with Lean Six Sigma
Industrial Railways Operating (IROR) certification

Applications close on Thursday the 12th of November 2026 (Rio Tinto reserves the right to remove advertised roles prior to this date).

Career development & education assistance to further your technical or leadership ambitions
A competitive base salary reflective of your skills and experience with annual incentive program
Ongoing access to family-friendly health and medical programs, pension and savings plans
Attractive share ownership plan
Leave for all of life’s reasons (vacation/annual, paid parental, sick leave)
Exclusive employee discounts
