This is a hands-on finance role for someone who wants to own the numbers, not just review them.

We are a growing Canadian consumer products company selling across e-commerce, marketplaces, wholesale, and retail channels.

We're looking for a Controller to own the day-to-day finance function and help build a strong financial foundation for our next stage of growth.

This is a sole finance role, so you'll be directly involved in the work: closing the books, reconciling accounts, reviewing COGS, managing cash flow, preparing reports, strengthening controls, and ensuring the financial information leadership relies on is accurate.

You'll also own the company's budgeting, forecasting, and financial modelling processes, giving leadership better visibility into future revenue, margins, cash flow, and profitability and helping evaluate the financial impact of key business decisions.

We're looking for someone who enjoys getting into the details, understands inventory-based businesses, and is comfortable moving between historical accounting and forward-looking financial planning.

What You'll Own

Accounting & Finance

Manage month-end and year-end close
Prepare accurate monthly financial statements and reporting
Manage Accounts Payable and payment processes
Complete bank, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations
Maintain the general ledger, accruals, and supporting schedules
Manage cash flow and working capital
Support payroll as needed, including year-end T4 review
Work with external accountants, tax advisors, and auditors
Support Canadian and US tax requirements as needed
Maintain accurate financial records and ensure reporting is complete, timely, and reliable

COGS, Inventory Accounting & Controls

Our Operations team manages inventory day-to-day. Your role is to ensure the financial accounting behind that inventory is accurate.

You'll:

Own the accuracy of COGS and inventory accounting
Reconcile inventory systems to the general ledger
Review inventory adjustments, transfers, write-offs, and discrepancies
Investigate COGS and inventory variances
Review product costing and landed costs
Ensure freight, duties, and other applicable costs are recorded correctly
Ensure accurate inventory and COGS cut-off at month-end and year-end
Review inventory valuation, write-downs, and reserves where appropriate
Support physical inventory counts from a financial and audit perspective
Maintain strong financial controls and audit trails
Monitor trends in product costs and margin and identify areas requiring further investigation

You will not be responsible for purchasing, demand planning, or warehouse management. The key question you'll help us answer is: "Is our inventory value correct, and is our COGS accurate?"

Financial Planning, Forecasting & Modelling

You'll help leadership understand not only where the business has been, but where it is going.

You'll:

Prepare monthly financial reporting for leadership and explain key variances, trends, and business drivers
Lead the annual budgeting process and maintain rolling financial forecasts
Build and maintain financial models covering revenue, gross margin, operating expenses, cash flow, and working capital
Maintain short- and medium-term cash flow forecasts and identify potential cash requirements or constraints
Forecast revenue and profitability across e-commerce, marketplace, wholesale, and retail channels
Model COGS, gross margin, and contribution margin by product, channel, and other relevant business drivers
Build scenario and sensitivity models to evaluate changes in sales, pricing, promotions, product costs, freight, duties, and operating expenses
Model the financial impact of new products, channel expansion, major investments, and other business initiatives
Compare actual performance against budgets and forecasts and investigate material variances
Update assumptions and forecasts as business conditions change
Partner with Operations and Leadership to translate operational plans into financial forecasts
Help leadership understand the cash, margin, and profitability impact of key business decisions
Continuously improve forecasting accuracy, model structure, and the quality of financial information used for decision-making

Systems & Process Improvement

You'll work across systems including Fulfil.io, Xero, Float, Shopify, Amazon, and other financial and operational platforms.

You'll:

Improve financial workflows and controls
Identify reconciliation and integration issues
Reduce unnecessary manual accounting and reporting work
Improve the flow of information between operational and financial systems
Improve reporting and forecasting processes as the business grows
Build scalable financial processes that reduce reliance on manual spreadsheets where appropriate
Use automation and AI where they can improve accuracy and efficiency

You don't need to be a developer or e-commerce analyst, but you should be comfortable understanding how transactions and financial data move between systems.

What We're Looking ForRequired

CPA designation or equivalent
Strong hands-on accounting experience
Experience independently managing month-end and year-end close
Strong financial statement preparation experience
Strong knowledge of COGS and inventory accounting
Experience with inventory valuation and landed costs
Experience reconciling ERP or inventory systems to the general ledger
Strong understanding of accrual accounting and financial controls
Experience with Accounts Payable, cash flow, and working capital
Experience leading budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes
Experience building and maintaining financial models for a growing business
Strong understanding of cash flow forecasting, scenario modelling, and variance analysis
Ability to translate operational assumptions into financial forecasts
Strong Excel and Google Sheets skills
Experience building structured and dynamic financial models
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to communicate financial insights clearly to non-finance stakeholders
Ability to work independently and take ownership of the finance function

Experience in e-commerce, consumer products, retail, manufacturing, or another inventory-based business would be a strong asset.
