Original job description

Corporate Lawyer (3–5 Years’ Call) | RJS LAW Professional Corporation | Markham, ON (On-Site, Full-Time)

About RJS LAW

RJS LAW Professional Corporation is a corporate and commercial law firm in Markham that serves businesses across the GTA and beyond. Our clients include insurers, financial services companies, manufacturers and growing private businesses. We give them practical legal advice that is built around how their business actually works.

Many of our clients use us as their outsourced in-house counsel. We get to know their operations, markets and growth plans so that our advice supports their goals instead of slowing them down. We aim to be strategic partners, not just outside advisors, and our clients come back to us for that reason.

Why Join Us

You’ll be part of a dynamic, close-knit team that cares about two things: excellent client service and sophisticated legal work. You’ll handle real files from the start, including commercial agreements, M&A and corporate transactions, governance, regulatory compliance and employment matters. You’ll also work directly with clients and decision-makers instead of sitting several layers away from them.

Our Values

  • Client first. We are responsive, we are accessible, and we know our clients’ businesses.
  • Practical excellence. We give sophisticated advice in plain language that clients can act on.
  • Ownership. We trust our lawyers to run their files and stand behind their work.
  • Collaboration. We share knowledge, back each other up and win as a team.
  • Growth. We invest in our people’s development, both as lawyers and as advisors.

Life at RJS LAW

We work hard and we make time to enjoy it together. Team lunches, holiday celebrations, summer outings and milestone celebrations are part of who we are.

The Role

  • Advise clients on a broad range of corporate and commercial matters
  • Draft, review and negotiate commercial agreements
  • Support transactions, including M&A, reorganizations and financings
  • Advise on corporate governance, business structures and regulatory compliance
  • Act as outsourced in-house counsel for select clients, which includes attending meetings, understanding their business objectives and giving practical, business-focused guidance
  • Manage your own files from intake to completion
  • Collaborate with colleagues and client stakeholders, and stay current on legislative and industry developments

What You Bring

  • A law degree (J.D./LL.B.) from a Canadian law school
  • Licensed to practise law in Ontario and a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
  • 3–5 years of post-call experience in corporate/commercial law, gained in private practice
  • Hands-on experience running client files, with the ability to manage matters independently with little to no supervision
  • Strong drafting, negotiation and research skills
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain complex legal issues clearly to business clients
  • Strong organization and attention to detail, with the ability to juggle multiple matters and deadlines
  • A client-focused, business-minded approach (in-house or outsourced in-house experience is an asset)
  • Commercial Real Estate and Commercial Financing experience welcomed.

How to Apply

  • Send your resume and cover letter to HR@rjslaw.ca. We thank all applicants for their interest. Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
