Our client, a highly respected national law firm, is seeking a Senior Associate Lawyer (8+ years of post-call experience) to join its Aboriginal and Constitutional Law practice in Toronto. This is a unique opportunity to work on complex, high-impact litigation and public law matters while collaborating with a leading team and contributing to legal issues of significant importance to Indigenous communities across Canada.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will assist with complex litigation matters and assume carriage of small to mid-sized files. Responsibilities include:
- Developing and executing legal and litigation strategies.
- Conducting legal research and analysis.
- Drafting correspondence, pleadings, applications, affidavits, and other court materials.
- Assisting with legislative drafting and the implementation of agreements involving Indigenous governments and other stakeholders.
- Interviewing witnesses, preparing evidence, and conducting discovery-related work.
- Appearing before courts, tribunals, and administrative bodies.
- Facilitating community engagement sessions related to governance, law-making, and Indigenous legal traditions.
- Preparing for trials, hearings, and appeals, including drafting submissions and developing examination strategies.
- Supporting negotiations involving self-government, jurisdictional matters, consultation processes, and Indigenous self-determination initiatives.
- Managing client files and maintaining strong client relationships.
- Appearing before courts at various levels as required.
Qualifications
The ideal Candidate will:
- Have 8+ years of litigation experience.
- Have experience appearing before courts and tribunals and a solid understanding of civil litigation procedures.
- Demonstrate strong advocacy, oral communication, and written communication skills.
- Possess excellent analytical, research, interpretation, and drafting abilities.
- Be capable of working independently while contributing effectively within a team environment.
- Demonstrate strong relationship-building and client service abilities.
- Be eligible to practice law in Ontario and a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
Preferred Qualifications
Any of the following would be an asset:
- Experience working with Indigenous communities, governments, or organizations.
- Experience in Aboriginal, Indigenous, or Constitutional law.
- Experience with regulatory proceedings and administrative tribunals.
- Familiarity with consultation, engagement, and negotiation processes involving Indigenous Nations, government bodies, and industry stakeholders.
