Original job description

The role

We’re looking for our first dedicated HR leader to build and run the HR function across two companies in Canada and the US. This is a hands-on role: you’ll set the strategy and roadmap and also do the day-to-day work (20% HR administration).

What you’ll do

  • Build the function: Assess current practices, identify gaps, and deliver a prioritized HR roadmap tied to business growth. Set up a shared HR service model with clear responsibilities, approvals, and escalation paths.
  • Policies and compliance: Develop handbooks, policies, and procedures with Canadian and US variations. Keep practices compliant with federal, provincial, state, and local requirements, working with counsel as needed.
  • Recruitment and onboarding: Lead full-cycle hiring with managers, set consistent hiring standards, build pipelines, and create structured onboarding and probation reviews.
  • Employee relations: Be the trusted advisor to employees and managers. Coach on performance, attendance, conflict, and discipline; lead or coordinate confidential investigations; manage leave, accommodations, and offboarding.
  • Performance and development: Implement a practical performance framework, equip managers for effective conversations, and coordinate training and leadership development.
  • Compensation and benefits: Develop job levels and pay practices, support market benchmarking and salary reviews, and oversee Canadian and US benefits with providers and Finance.
  • Workforce planning and systems: Partner with leadership on org structure, succession, and workforce planning. Evaluate HR systems and introduce automation as the business grows.
  • Metrics and administration: Track time to hire, turnover, onboarding completion, and engagement, and recommend action. Maintain secure employee records, prepare HR documents, and provide accurate information to Payroll and Finance.

What you bring

  • 7+ years of progressive HR generalist or management experience, including building or scaling an HR function
  • Strong employee relations and investigations experience
  • Working knowledge of Canadian employment law; exposure to US requirements and multi-jurisdiction HR
  • Recruitment, compensation, and benefits experience
  • HRIS and HR metrics experience
  • CPHR/SHRM or a relevant degree
  • Sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to influence leader
