Original job description
This job posting is for a current vacancy with our client.
Our client, an established engineering and manufacturing organization specializing in electronic controls and automation solutions for heavy equipment and machinery, is seeking a Product Manager to join their growing Sales & Marketing team.
This is a highly technical, customer-facing Product Management opportunity for someone with an engineering foundation who enjoys working directly with customers to understand their equipment, applications, and technical requirements. The successful candidate will help define new products and solutions, translating customer needs into clear requirements that can be brought forward to the engineering team.
This is a newly created role due to company growth and will focus primarily on the front end of product development and product definition. The position works closely with customers as well as Engineering, Production, Quality, Sales, and Marketing.
The role is based in Mississauga, Ontario, with an expectation of approximately four days onsite and one day working from home.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and support front-end product definition based on customer requirements, applications, and market opportunities.
- Work directly with heavy equipment and engine manufacturers to understand their equipment, technical requirements, and operational challenges.
- Conduct detailed customer discovery and ask targeted technical questions to fully understand application requirements.
- Gather and evaluate technical information including inputs/outputs, motors, data sheets, power requirements, software functionality, and dimensional constraints.
- Translate customer requirements into clearly defined product requirements for the engineering team.
- Act as a bridge between customers and a multidisciplinary engineering organization responsible for product design and development.
- Develop a strong understanding of electronic control products, including circuit boards, connectors, embedded software, inputs/outputs, and electrical power concepts.
- Participate in New Product Introduction (NPI) activities from initial product definition through engineering, production, and commercial release.
- Support product launches related to machine automation, autonomous equipment, robotics, and electronic controls.
- Collaborate closely with Engineering, Production, Quality, Sales, and Marketing throughout the product lifecycle.
- Monitor relevant market trends, competitors, customer requirements, and regulatory considerations.
- Contribute to product positioning, technical marketing collateral, market strategies, and customer communications.
- Travel to customer locations as required, primarily within the United States with occasional international travel.
What They're Looking For
- Undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, Controls/Automation Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Ideally 2–3 years of relevant professional experience; strong recent graduates with meaningful co-op, internship, or technical work experience may also be considered.
- Foundational understanding of electronics, electrical controls, inputs/outputs, power, and software or embedded-system functionality.
- Strong customer-facing communication skills with the ability to listen, build rapport, and ask thoughtful technical questions.
- Ability to translate customer requirements into actionable information for technical and engineering teams.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
- Curious and willing to learn new products, technologies, applications, and internal processes.
- Detail-oriented and thorough while still able to make decisions and move projects forward efficiently.
- Valid G driver's licence, access to a vehicle, and ability to travel to customer locations.
- Ability to travel to the United States and internationally as required.
- Comfortable working primarily onsite in Mississauga.
Non-Negotiables
- Engineering degree in a relevant technical discipline.
- Strong foundational understanding of electrical/electronic systems and controls.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer-facing communication skills.
- Ability to ask strong technical discovery questions and understand customer requirements.
- Strong learning mindset, attention to detail, and willingness to understand the organization's products and processes.
- Valid driver's licence and access to a vehicle.
- Comfortable working approximately four days per week onsite in Mississauga.
- Ability to travel to the United States as required.
Nice to Have
- MBA or additional business education.
- Previous Product Management, Product Development, Applications Engineering, Technical Sales, or customer-facing engineering experience.
- Experience within heavy equipment, off-highway vehicles, automation, electronic controls, industrial electronics, mining, agriculture, engines, marine equipment, or automotive environments.
- Exposure to embedded systems, circuit boards, CAN-based controls, machine automation, autonomous equipment, or robotics.
- Experience gathering technical customer requirements and translating them for engineering teams.
- Previous experience participating in New Product Introduction or cross-functional product launches.
- Experience working directly with OEM customers.
- Relevant co-op or internship experience for early-career candidates.
This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer looking to transition into technical Product Management while remaining closely connected to engineering, technology, and customers. The successful candidate will gain exposure to global equipment manufacturers, work closely with a large engineering team, and develop deep expertise across electronic controls, automation, and product development.
