The Client:
Our client is an established organization operating within Canada's renewable energy sector, focused on the development and commercialization of large-scale clean energy infrastructure. With a growing portfolio of renewable power and energy storage initiatives, the organization is committed to advancing sustainable energy solutions through strategic investment, commercial partnerships, and disciplined project execution.
Operating in a collaborative and entrepreneurial environment, our client offers an opportunity for an experienced commercial professional to influence investment decisions, lead complex transactions, and contribute to the continued expansion of renewable energy infrastructure across Canada.
What you will achieve in this role:
- Evaluate renewable energy investment and acquisition opportunities, conducting commercial due diligence, financial assessments, and transaction negotiations.
- Support the development and expansion of utility-scale wind, solar, and battery energy storage projects, including commercial negotiations and equity partnerships with Indigenous communities.
- Lead competitive bidding strategies and manage the commercial and financial components of renewable energy RFPs, tenders, and procurement submissions.
- Originate, structure, and negotiate Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with utilities and commercial or industrial counterparties, including pricing structures, risk mitigation, and hedging strategies.
- Develop and evaluate project-level financial models, investment returns, and sensitivity analyses to support acquisitions, development opportunities, and commercial decisions.
- Monitor Canadian electricity markets, regulatory developments, procurement activity, and competitive trends to identify investment opportunities and assess commercial risks.
- Oversee bid governance processes, including internal approvals, legal reviews, financial security arrangements, submission requirements, and post-award obligations.
- Prepare investment proposals, acquisition recommendations, business cases, and financial presentations for senior leadership and investment committees.
- Collaborate with development, finance, legal, and investment stakeholders to structure commercial agreements, support transaction execution, and maintain strategic industry relationships.
- Manage multiple commercial initiatives simultaneously, ensuring accurate financial analysis, timely execution, and alignment with organizational objectives.
What you must bring to this role:
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, Engineering, or a related discipline. An MBA or CFA designation is considered an asset.
- 5 to 10+ years of experience in renewable energy commercialization, power origination, business development, or energy investments, ideally within an independent power producer, renewable energy developer, investment bank, institutional investment firm, or private equity environment.
- Demonstrated experience originating, structuring, and negotiating renewable energy Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) within the past five years.
- Strong understanding of Canadian wholesale electricity markets, commercial power contracts, electricity pricing mechanisms, and PPA structures, including knowledge of the Alberta and/or Ontario electricity markets.
- Proven experience evaluating wind, solar, or battery energy storage investments, including financial due diligence, project acquisitions, and transaction structuring.
- Strong financial analysis and modelling capabilities, including project-level pro forma financial models, investment valuations, forecasting, and sensitivity and scenario analysis.
- Excellent commercial negotiation and deal execution skills, with the ability to assess contractual risks and structure complex agreements.
- Experience preparing renewable energy procurement submissions, competitive RFP responses, or utility-led bidding processes is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of corporate electricity procurement, energy hedging strategies, and market-related financial exposures.
- Experience developing investment business cases, financial recommendations, and presentations for senior leadership or investment committees.
- Strong communication and relationship management skills, with the ability to collaborate across investment, development, legal, and finance teams. Established relationships within the Canadian renewable energy sector are considered an asset.
- Excellent organizational skills, independent judgment, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- A proactive, analytical, and detail-oriented approach to problem-solving and commercial decision-making.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and PowerPoint, and familiarity with collaborative business platforms.
