Regional Medical Director

ROSC Solutions Group (RSG)

ROSC Solutions Group (RSG) is seeking an experienced medical leader to help build and lead a sustainable, recovery-oriented medical model across our growing continuum of services.

This role combines advanced medical practice, withdrawal management, people leadership, education, medical governance and program development. The successful candidate will help establish consistent standards of care, develop future Nurse Practitioners and nursing teams, and build a medical model capable of supporting RSG's continued growth.

The Regional Medical Director will be primarily based at New Beginnings, providing medical leadership to our 12-bed withdrawal management/detox program, while also providing regional medical leadership and NP support to our 100-bed Lakeview Recovery Community and future RSG sites.

Regular travel between sites will be required. The Medical Director will also provide virtual medical and on-call support to ensure teams have timely access to advanced medical guidance.

This role is situated within Indigenous-focused health and recovery services. A demonstrated commitment to cultural humility, anti-racist practice, Indigenous self-determination, and trauma- and violence-informed care is essential.

A significant priority of this role will also be developing the people and systems required for RSG's future medical model. This includes strengthening RSG's relationship with the University of Alberta NP program, creating meaningful learning opportunities for students, developing newly qualified and recruited NPs, strengthening nursing practice, and supporting interdisciplinary teams.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Medical Leadership & Withdrawal Management

Provide advanced medical leadership across RSG programs, with a significant focus on safe, evidence-informed withdrawal management.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assess and manage individuals requiring withdrawal management and detoxification services, including complex presentations, concurrent disorders and medical comorbidities.
  • Prescribe and manage medications within professional scope and establish consistent medication-management practices.
  • Develop and maintain standardized withdrawal monitoring, admission, exclusion, escalation and transfer criteria.
  • Provide medical consultation and complex case review to nursing and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Establish appropriate medical escalation, after-hours and on-call support pathways.
  • Support continuity of care as individuals transition from withdrawal management into residential treatment, community services and longer-term recovery.
  • Provide medical leadership and support to RSG's residential programs and future sites through a combination of onsite and virtual care.

People Leadership, NP Development & Education

A major responsibility of this position will be developing RSG's future medical workforce and building internal capacity rather than creating a model dependent on one practitioner.

The Regional Medical Director will:

  • Provide leadership, mentorship and medical oversight to NPs, nursing teams and medical staff.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, performance management, competency development and succession planning within medical and nursing teams.
  • Develop a structured orientation, mentorship and competency pathway for newly graduated and newly recruited Nurse Practitioners entering addiction medicine.
  • Establish progressive independent-practice expectations and provide mentorship and complex case consultation as NPs develop their competencies.
  • Build and maintain a strong relationship with the University of Alberta Nurse Practitioner program and other academic partners.
  • Coordinate NP student placements and provide or oversee preceptorship, mentorship, evaluation and meaningful learning opportunities in addiction medicine and recovery.
  • Develop academic partnerships as a sustainable recruitment and workforce-development pathway for RSG.

Interdisciplinary Education & Capacity Building

The Regional Medical Director will help build a safe and effective interdisciplinary model for withdrawal management.

Working collaboratively with internal and external partners, the Medical Director will:

  • Develop and implement structured withdrawal-management education and competency pathways for Recovery Coaches and other appropriate team members.
  • Clearly establish which supportive functions can appropriately be performed by Recovery Coaches and which assessments, medication decisions, restricted activities and interventions must remain with regulated healthcare professionals.
  • Establish competency assessment, refresher education, medical supervision and escalation requirements.
  • Develop education for nursing and interdisciplinary teams in areas such as addiction medicine, withdrawal management, concurrent disorders, medication management, risk assessment and recovery-oriented care.
  • Support staffing models that use NP, nursing and Recovery Coach resources effectively while maintaining appropriate scope, medical accountability and safety.

Culturally Safe & Recovery-Oriented Medical Practice

RSG recognizes that withdrawal management is one component of a much broader recovery journey. The Regional Medical Director will ensure medical services support individualized recovery goals and complement the relational, cultural, psychosocial and community components of recovery.

The Medical Director will:

  • Embed cultural humility, anti-racist and trauma- and violence-informed approaches into medical practice, education and leadership.
  • Elevate Indigenous voices, knowledge and lived experiences to inform medical decisions, service design and continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrate accountability for ensuring care is experienced as culturally safe by those receiving services.
  • Respectfully support the integration of Indigenous knowledge, cultural practices and ways of healing alongside Western medicine.
  • Recognize and actively address systemic racism, colonial harms and structural barriers that contribute to inequitable healthcare experiences and outcomes.
  • Support Indigenous self-determination and informed choice in medical care and recovery planning.
  • Incorporate principles of recovery capital and harm reduction while respecting individual pathways to recovery.
  • Promote continuity and engagement in care rather than treating medical stabilization as an isolated intervention.

Medical Governance, Quality & Future Growth

The Regional Medical Director will establish and maintain a consistent medical governance framework capable of supporting RSG's current programs and future growth.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop standardized medical and nursing policies, protocols, documentation and prescribing standards.
  • Establish clear medical accountability, coverage and escalation processes across RSG programs.
  • Review critical incidents, medication events and complex cases and lead improvements arising from medical quality reviews.
  • Monitor quality indicators and support audits, Medical and Medication Safety Committees, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Recommend medical and nursing staffing models based on program acuity, scope and service-delivery requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with senior leadership to align medical services with operational and organizational priorities.
  • Build medical systems, leadership capacity and coverage models that can scale to future RSG sites.
  • Support the design and implementation of medical services within new programs and jurisdictions.

While the initial focus will be Alberta, the role may evolve to support RSG operations in other provinces. Where medical practice extends outside Alberta, appropriate provincial registration will be required.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be an experienced medical leader with a strong background or interest in addiction medicine, withdrawal management, recovery and the development of healthcare professionals.

For Nurse Practitioner candidates:

  • Active registration and good standing as a Nurse Practitioner in Alberta, with eligibility and willingness to obtain additional provincial registration as required by the future scope of the role.
  • Significant NP experience, ideally within addiction medicine, withdrawal management, mental health, emergency medicine, primary care or a related environment.
  • Strong knowledge of substance use disorders and medically supported withdrawal management.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and manage complex medical presentations.
  • Experience leading, mentoring and developing healthcare professionals.
  • Strong teaching, communication and people-leadership capabilities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to cultural humility, culturally safe care, anti-racist practice and working respectfully within Indigenous-focused health and recovery services.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly between RSG locations and provide virtual/on-call medical support.
  • Physician candidates with relevant addiction medicine, withdrawal management and medical leadership experience may also be considered.

Experience in bed-based recovery services, medical program development, NP mentorship or preceptorship, interdisciplinary team development, Indigenous health, medical quality improvement, and building services across multiple sites would be considered strong assets.

Please submit your resume by applying directly through this job posting. Thank you for your interest in joining ROSC Solutions Group. Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
