Original job description

Roth Canada is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Equity Research Associate to support a Senior Energy Research Analyst covering Canadian oil and gas producers. This opportunity combines hands-on financial modelling, industry research, and direct mentorship within a lean, growing team.

The Organization

Roth Canada is the Canadian affiliate of Roth Capital Partners, serving small-cap and growth companies. Launched in 2021, Roth Canada supports Canadian companies’ growth by complementing Canadian distribution with access to investors across the United States and internationally. Roth Canada has offices in Vancouver, Calgary, and Toronto.

The Opportunity

You will support coverage of conventional and unconventional exploration and production companies, oil sands producers, and royalty companies, with an emphasis on small- and mid-cap names across the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. Working closely with the Senior Energy Research Analyst, you will develop sector expertise, contribute to investment research, and build the skills to analyze securities and communicate investment recommendations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain detailed operating and financial models, including quarterly and annual production forecasts by asset and product stream, three-statement financials, and net asset value (NAV) analyses.
  • Update models for quarterly results, reserve reports, guidance revisions, and mergers, acquisitions, and asset acquisition and divestiture transactions; reconcile actual results to estimates and explain key variances.
  • Extract and interpret data from SEDAR+ filings, including MD&A, financial statements, annual information forms, and NI 51-101 reserves disclosures; investor presentations; and well and production data available through geoSCOUT and XI AssetBook.
  • Maintain comparable company and precedent transaction analyses, commodity price assumptions, and sector screens.
  • Draft sections of initiation reports, quarterly earnings notes, company updates, and thematic industry research.
  • Support the analyst with client inquiries and calls, marketing trips, conferences, and corporate access events.
  • Adhere to applicable securities regulations, firm compliance policies, and professional standards, including requirements relating to confidentiality, conflicts of interest, and research independence.

Qualifications

We are looking for a quick learner with a strong interest in the operational, technical, and financial drivers of the oil and gas industry, and a desire to develop expertise in investment research.
Required
  • A university degree in finance, accounting, economics, business, engineering, geology, or a related discipline.
  • One to three years of relevant experience in capital markets, corporate finance, and/or a technical oil and gas role.
  • Advanced Excel skills and demonstrated financial modelling ability, including the ability to build formula-driven, auditable models.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills, exceptional attention to detail, and clear written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, manage competing priorities, and meet time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Flexibility to work outside regular business hours during earnings periods and other market-driven events.
Preferred
  • CFA designation or progress toward the designation.
  • Familiarity with geoSCOUT, XI AssetBook, FactSet, and/or Bloomberg.
  • Knowledge of Canadian oil and gas operations, reserves evaluation, or energy-sector valuation.

Compensation and Benefits

Roth Canada offers a competitive benefits package. Final compensation will reflect relevant experience, qualifications, and skills.
