Original job description
Opened in 1914 and welcoming over 1.3 million visitors annually, the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) is Canada's most-visited museum, ranking among the top 10 cultural institutions in North America. At ROM, we are dedicated to building and sharing global collections, sharing knowledge, inspiring learning, and fostering community engagement. As a globally recognized field research institute, ROM houses an impressive collection of over 18 million artworks, cultural objects, and natural history specimens, showcased in over 40 galleries and exhibition spaces. We are committed to creating a space where art, culture, and nature intersect, connecting people and communities to the past, present and shared future.
As we continue to work toward our goals to transform and evolve as one of the world’s foremost 21st-century museums, we seek passionate and dynamic team members who embody our mission and values.
WHO WE NEED
We are seeking a skilled and dependable Engineer (Overnight) to ensure the safe and continuous operation of ROM's mechanical, HVAC, boiler, and building systems during overnight, weekend, and statutory-holiday hours.
Reporting to the Manager, Maintenance & Facility Operations, you will serve as the primary certified operator of ROM's TSSA-regulated boiler plant and associated pressure equipment. Working alongside a Service Mechanic as part of a two-person overnight team, you will oversee critical plant operations, complete required testing and documentation, and respond to equipment faults and building emergencies.
This role is essential to protecting ROM's collections, facilities, and occupants during hours when fewer staff are onsite. You will monitor environmental conditions, troubleshoot building systems, coordinate emergency responses, and help maintain continuous, reliable operations across the Museum.
The ideal candidate brings strong technical knowledge, regulatory expertise, and the confidence to work independently while exercising sound judgment in a complex institutional environment.
HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT
- Operate, monitor, and control ROM's boiler plant, chillers, HVAC equipment, building automation systems (BAS), electrical distribution, emergency generators, water treatment, compressors, ventilation, plumbing, and fire and life-safety systems.
- Perform and accurately document mandatory daily and shift testing, operating logs, and inspections for boilers and pressure equipment in accordance with TSSA requirements and applicable regulations.
- Monitor temperature, relative humidity, and building system performance in galleries and collection storage areas, responding to environmental changes that could put collections at risk.
- Respond to equipment alarms, mechanical faults, water leaks, and building emergencies, taking immediate action to isolate, contain, and mitigate risks while escalating significant concerns as appropriate.
- Conduct regular inspections of plant rooms, mechanical spaces, galleries, and public areas to identify hazards, equipment deficiencies, and emerging maintenance needs.
- Complete preventive and corrective maintenance within the scope of your qualifications, supporting work orders and planned maintenance through ROM's computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
- Maintain accurate operating records, alarm reports, and shift-handover documentation to ensure continuity across overnight, incoming, and daytime maintenance teams.
- Provide technical and operational support for overnight film shoots, special events, and after-hours programming, collaborating with Security and other ROM teams as required.
- Support monitoring and emergency call-outs at ROM's off-site storage facilities in Etobicoke and Oakville, while following established safety procedures and maintaining reliable overnight building operations.
WHAT YOU BRING
- Valid Ontario Third-Class Operating Engineer Certificate of Qualification (or higher) issued under O. Reg. 219/01 (Operating Engineers) or equivalent. This is a mandatory requirement.
- Minimum three to five (3–5) years of experience operating and maintaining building systems in a commercial or institutional environment, including experience with a certified boiler plant.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Technical Standards and Safety Act and applicable boiler and pressure vessel regulations, including mandatory daily and shift testing, inspections, and record-keeping requirements.
- Strong technical knowledge of building automation systems (BAS), chiller and HVAC plants, electrical distribution, and fire and life-safety systems, with demonstrated troubleshooting and alarm-response skills.
- Ability to work independently during overnight shifts, exercise sound judgment under pressure, and respond effectively to urgent building or equipment issues.
- Strong organizational, written and verbal communication, and record-keeping skills, including proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and building automation platforms.
- Valid WHMIS, Standard First Aid/CPR, and Working at Heights certification, or the ability to obtain these before starting. Refrigeration/Ozone Depletion Prevention (ODP) and Gas Technician (G2/G3) certifications are assets.
- Experience working in a museum, heritage facility, healthcare institution, or another environment requiring careful environmental control and protection of sensitive assets is an asset.
WHAT WE OFFER
