Original job description

We are seeking a full-time permanent Quantitative Software Engineer, Data Engineering to join our team.

Reporting directly to the Director, Data Engineering, this role helps build, validate, and support the data platform the firm runs on. The Data Engineering team owns the ingestion, transformation, storage, and management of RPIA’s business-critical data - the trusted foundation behind the internal systems used by Portfolio Managers, Traders, Researchers, and Risk Management.

The role spans the full development lifecycle - contributing to solution design, implementation, later-stage development and testing, and production support. We are a small team operating with a high degree of autonomy. You will be given direction and context rather than detailed instructions, and you will be expected to reason through problems and carry assigned work through to a reliable outcome.

Support is available to help you ramp up on our platform and the business it serves.

The duties and responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

Solution Design & Software Development

Contribute to the design of data services and platform components, developing a clear understanding of data flow, system interactions, and expected behavior before implementation.
Develop and maintain software applications and data services supporting portfolio management, trading, funding, research, and operational workflows.
Build new features and enhance existing systems using established software engineering practices.
Participate in code reviews and contribute to maintaining a high standard of software quality.

Testing & Release

Take independent ownership of later-stage development and testing for assigned functionality. Design and execute test plans with particular focus on edge cases and failure modes that may not be covered by existing tests.
Validate data outputs against expected business and real-world behavior, using quantitative judgment to recognize anomalies and help localize where problems may have occurred.
Support release activities and help maintain stable development, testing, and production environments.
Continuously improve testing, deployment, and release practices, including automation of steps that are currently manual.

Post-Release Monitoring & Production Support

Monitor newly released functionality and data pipelines, independently assessing whether outputs are correct and reasonable rather than confirming only that a process completed.
Investigate and resolve production issues affecting business-critical systems, using discrepancies in system behavior or data outputs to localize problems, determine root causes, and implement durable solutions.
Work directly with business users to understand issues and provide timely resolution.

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

Collaborate with Portfolio Managers, Traders, Researchers, Risk Management, and other business stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver practical solutions.
Work closely with engineers across multiple locations throughout the software delivery lifecycle.
Contribute to internal tooling and engineering infrastructure that improves software quality, reliability, and team productivity.
Document applications, technical solutions, data flows, and operational processes to facilitate knowledge sharing across the team.

Critical Competencies

Systems Thinking & Logical Reasoning - Breaks complex problems into manageable components, reasons through how data should flow through a system, identifies where transformations, validation, and business logic should occur, and anticipates interactions and failure modes beyond existing test cases.
Engineering Judgment - Balances implementation complexity, business impact, reliability, risk, and expected benefit when deciding which issues or improvements warrant engineering effort.
Data Judgment - Recognizes when a numerical result or data output does not look reasonable, forms practical expectations about the range or order of magnitude of results from the underlying inputs and business context and uses discrepancies to guide investigation.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
3+ years of professional software development experience involving financial or quantitative systems.
Experience working with relational databases and SQL, with an understanding of how data is structured, transformed, and propagated through software systems.
Working knowledge of fixed-income markets and quantitative finance, with a focus on corporate credit.
Experience working with numeric or quantitative data where correctness materially mattered and outputs had to be validated against expected or real-world behavior.
Demonstrated ability to reason through data flows, system interactions, and failure modes before implementation and testing.
Demonstrated ability to break down ambiguous problems, investigate unexpected results, and use evidence to help localize problems.
Demonstrated ability to assess engineering effort against expected business value, risk, and reliability impact when deciding what to build or fix.
Experience using source control and collaborative software development practices.
Demonstrated ability to independently learn technically dense material, reason through unfamiliar systems, and make progress on ambiguous problems with minimal direction.
Familiarity with Python and/or C#/.NET is an asset.
