Job Description: System Analyst / Application Developer – Senior

Location: Alberta, Canada (Hybrid – 3 days onsite)

Duration: 8-month contract

Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced System Analyst / Application Developer – Senior with strong hands-on experience in C programming, PowerBuilder, and Sybase to support application development, maintenance, and enhancement projects.

The successful candidate will be responsible for requirements gathering, application programming, system analysis, database design, testing, and production support. This role requires the ability to work closely with business users, subject matter experts, application development teams, and technical stakeholders to deliver reliable application solutions.

Experience working with Oil and Gas regulations and royalty-related applications would be an asset.

Key Responsibilities

1. Application Development and Maintenance

• Develop, maintain, and enhance enterprise applications using C, PowerBuilder, InfoMaker, and Sybase SQL.
• Write and maintain application code for the Solaris 11 platform.
• Develop and support both desktop and web-based application interfaces.
• Perform application programming and system analysis activities.
• Review existing application code and recommend improvements and optimizations.
• Ensure application changes follow established development standards and best practices.

2. Requirements Gathering and System Analysis

• Liaise with business users and stakeholders to gather, analyze, and validate business and technical requirements.
• Confirm end-user requirements and translate them into functional and technical designs.
• Assess technical impacts and recommend appropriate application design solutions.
• Identify opportunities to reuse existing components and frameworks.
• Ensure proposed solutions align with business needs, application architecture, budget, and timelines.

3. Database Design and Technical Documentation

• Design, develop, and implement SQL databases and database structures.
• Work with Microsoft SQL Server, SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), Sybase SQL, and stored procedures.
• Prepare technical designs, application architecture, and database documentation.
• Develop and maintain system design manuals, technical manuals, and reference documentation.
• Document business processes, application functionality, and technical specifications.

4. Testing and Quality Assurance

• Conduct unit testing, system testing, and integration testing.
• Support application testing activities with business users and subject matter experts.
• Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve application defects and system-level issues.
• Assist with performance and penetration testing.
• Perform root cause analysis and recommend corrective actions.
• Ensure application changes meet functional and technical specifications.

5. Release Management and Operational Support

• Coordinate application releases and deployment schedules.
• Ensure application changes are developed, tested, and implemented through a controlled release process.
• Provide application support, maintenance, and operational assistance.
• Coordinate with development teams, business users, and interfaced systems during testing and implementation.
• Track project activities, report progress, and support application lifecycle planning.
• Ensure planned releases remain on schedule.

Mandatory Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of experience with software development processes and associated best practices.
• Minimum 5 years of experience working as an Application Developer in a large enterprise IT environment.
• Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience with C programming on Solaris / RedHat platforms.
• Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server, SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), and stored procedures.
• Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience working directly with end-users to gather, validate, and confirm requirements.

Nice-to-Have Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of experience in the analysis, development, and integration of complex IT systems.
• Minimum 3 years of experience with unit testing and Test-Driven Development (TDD) tools.
• Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience with C# and Microsoft Visual Studio.
• Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience with InfoMaker and PowerBuilder.
• Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience with job automation.
• Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience with KornShell (KSH) and Perl scripting.
